Product Description

Product Description

China is set to become the world's next superpower. Should America celebrate - or be afraid? China: Friend or Foe? deals with vital questions: Who are China's power-players? Will the Chinese economy increase trade or kill off our livelihoods? How is China using its political and cultural influence? Accessible and hard-hitting, China: Friend or Foe? goes beyond borders and stereotypes to explain what China means to America and the West at large.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Primer, 2 May 2007

This review is from: China: Friend or Foe? (Paperback)
This is a great primer about modern day China. It is divided into five parts, Politics, Business, Culture, Context and Society, with about 5-7 short essays/articles about various subjects within those themes. Each essay is easy to read and concise and gives all the relevant information you could need. It also provides resources for further reading for those topics that catch your imagination. This is a great place to turn to for basic information on the many facets of China. I enjoyed this book a great deal and was left with a new appreciation for China and it's place in the world, as well as the struggles it has undergone and the international fears about it's economic and military strengths. A good overall read.

4.0 out of 5 stars Short but sweet, 3 Jan 2007

I enjoyed this book. It is not a heavy read, it is extremely readable and accessible to anyone who is not used to reading political/business books. It is more of a collection of short essays on various topics rather than a single work.

Each chapter or "essay" is 4 or 5 pages long, so it's easy to pick up for a few minutes and then put down for another time. A great book for the commute to work or the bathroom!

I particularly enjoyed the "Culture" section with essays on "History", "Culture of Food", "Religion" and "Sports". The essays on "Globalisation" and the "Internet" are also very good.

The only criticism I have of this book is it's depth. This is really just a primer for anyone who is interested in China. Further reading would be required for a deeper understanding of the issues facing China and the world.
