You know she's got Soul,
By
This review is from: Chimurenga Soul (Audio CD)
I was lucky enough to catch Netsayi at the Tolpiddle martyr's festival this summer, where she was a last minute stand-in, and she blew me away. Unfortunately the awesome Burning Spear cover she played isn't on offer here but the album content is top notch. By turns jazzy, soulful, raw, smooth, playful and evocative, Netsayi is the real deal. Whether or not you go for likes of Corinne Bailey Rae, Katie Mellua, Amy Winehouse or any other pretenders Netsayi is the new queen of all she surveys. She can conquer the world without a multi million pound ad campaign and a Johnathan Ross endorsement, believe. My highlight would be either 'Tatters' or 'Refugee Song' but this is all killer.

My Summer tip,
By Jay2Play (London, UK) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Chimurenga Soul (Audio CD)
Having first checked Netsayi's tune on Chris Ofili's 'Freeness' comp, I picked this up as a promo at the magazine where my mate works and it's been on heavy rotation on my Nano ever since. There's something for everyone here - jazz fans, world fans, soul fans. Don't know who did the production as I don't have the sleeve notes, but there's a warmth and breadth to it that just blows me away. And don't get me started on this woman's voice - one moment she's as coolly fragile as 'Stronger Than Pride' era Sade, the next she's as devil may care raw as Nina Simone. Stand out tracks include the anthemic 'Hondo', the jit fun of 'Tatters' and 'Missionary's Prayer', an icily told acoustic tale of imperial folly - it's just so refreshing to be reminded that grown up music doesn't have to be MOR! My album of the year so far.

This album is a mixture of soul, shona chimurenga, blues and jazz. All blend it together. Its a definate classic. I think the lyrics are just amazing. A good combination of a great voice and lyrics.I hope Netsayi does well because shes definately in my favourite musicians to watch out.
