I was pretty sceptical 'bout buying this LP. I am a long-time Mayhem-fan, but the Grand Declaration Of War LP had let me down and I was wondering if this one will do the same. Well, it didn't... It's damn good... Necrobutcher and Blasphemer are doing one of the best riffs in Mayhem's history, while Hellhammer is doing what he knows better....blastin.....
Maniac has done a great job on this record....his vocals sound like the ones on Wolf's Lair Abyss and the lyrics are pretty good, also....A must-have fro any Mayhem fan!!!!!!

I love this album. Ive heard mayhem before but thought nothing of it, but i came accross this album in a store in london, it was cheap so i thought 'ah heck give it a chance' so i bought it.

When i arrived at my train station i pulled out this out the bag shoved it in my cd player and pressed play. I was gobsmacked! okay so the heaviness its obviously there, but what got me the most its the dark tunes they have. Their sound is so evil, and thats the stronghold for me. The speed well, what do you expect? its mayhem, black metal so youre bound to get pounded by fast hyperbeats or blast beats. When they play slow i get the feeling death is creeping behind its unbelievable. when i got to the fourth i had to turn my cd player off because it was too much to take in for the first listen!

Buy it!

Everyone feared Mayhem had lost their way after the last album, "GDOW", which was flawed to say the least! But there was always something about this band that made me want to come back to check if they could finally achieve their awesome potential...
Seems to me they are closer than ever before! This album clearly goes back to their roots with the straight forward metal sound of their early albums yet manages to incorporate their new faster, extreme style which I find to be an ideal combination:
Whore is a fast blast of a track and while the speed is impressive, the song suffers from the boredom factor a bit towards the end! A good opener though! 3/5
Dark Night of the Soul has a very nice opening passage with double bass so fast you can't help but sport a cheeky grin! The rest of the song takes many changes in speed and style which is my preferred format to a 3 minute blast beat track. This track really is a cold masterpiece! By this point I have also realised that Maniac's voice is alot more bearable than past attempts, which is nice! 5/5
Rape Humanity with Pride comes out blazing with blast beats galore and is a good solid track with some nice riffage towards the beginning and frightening double bass in the middle! A nice breakdown in speed just after the fast mid section also shows that Mayhem are showing what they can really do on this album! The last 2 minutes could have been shortened however as the tune becomes a little samey, however this is nit picking! 4/5
My Death surprises the listener by starting with very fast riffage that you expect to be accompanied by ferocious drumming, but the track develops a slow, doomy feel to it, and it works wonderfully! Cold and creepy but also so powerful at times!

Although this is not one of my favourite black metal albums I hold it on a par with Satyricon's 'Now, Diabolical' as worthy of repeated listens when I'm in the right mood. What it lacks in atmosphere it makes up for with pure evil aggression, and on that level it is very hard to beat. Therefore, turning the volume up is a must to appreciate this work. Like Mayhem said in an interview upon release, last time (on Grand Declaration of War) they wanted to educate you, this time they just want to kill you! Get the limited edition cross fold-out digipack for some excellent photos of the band and search out the Season of Mist wallpapers linked to this release. It's a shame this was vocalist Maniac's last album with the group (I still don't get 'Ordo ab chao') but whilst I don't class it as an essential purchase it is sufficiently different from (though not as good as) Wolf's Lair Abyss and the aforementioned Grand Declaration of War to make it worth adding to your collection.

Once again legendary MayheM is back with more hate. This album is a big step forward from Grand Declaration of War. Dark Night of The Soul, Rape Humanity with Pride and Impious Devious Leper Lord are awesome tracks out of 8 great tracks. Hellhammer will keep striking your mind in all 8 tracks
