Chimaira's Coming Alive is an absolutely tremendous package, a true must-own that no Chimaira fan should even consider being without. The set contains a concert DVD taken from the band's tenth annual hometown Christmas concert, a CD of the same concert minus the final song and as the main feature, a three hour Documentary in four parts that covers everything the band have been up to in the two years prior to its release.
First off, the concert DVD is simply put and without hyperbole the greatest concert DVD I have ever bought (and this compliment comes from someone who absolutely loves concert DVDs)

Director Todd Bell is a genius and this film is unlike anything you've ever seen before, his unique and inspired cinematography really pushes the boundaries of what a concert film should look like. It almost seems like up until now concerts were just filmed and edited in a utilitarian way and Todd Bell is the first person to really ask how else it could and should be done. The only thing that is even close in style is Nine Inch Nails' amazing looking `Beside You In Time,' concert and `The Slip,' bonus DVD, but this goes even further.
From the choice of shots, the unusual choices in depth of field and framing and the band's own excellent light and video show you really get a truly unique and fantastic viewing experience.

From a purely visual perspective this is the finest looking concert DVD on the market, not just from metal bands but even from million dollar rock bands who can afford the best.
Don't think however, that this is just a treat for the eyes because the performance which Chimaira lays down is practically unrivaled and again this is without hyperbole, the energy and passion in the practically note perfect and ferociously heavy concert is breathtaking.

So, I bought this in-store on Saturday 31st July, and I was delighted to get hold of the 2x DVD 1x CD package which is REALLY nice.

Now, before I go too far into this review, I will state the big problem I have with this set. The music mix on the live set DVD at their 10th Anniversary Christmas show in their hometown of Cleveland, Ohio is awful!! An absolutely dreadful mix that will apall many music DVD fans, myself included.

Basically any bass sample from Chris Spicuzza destroys the mix, obliterating the sound of the other instruments and the singer. The same goes for intense double bass drum segments, as towards the end of the DVD, we witness Andol's kick drums blasting several times without the other band members and you can truely hear how awful the sound mix was on the particular night. It's a massive letdown that ruins the exciting, arty performance that is perfectly filmed.

So the footage itself is astonishing, wonderful camera angles will fill your screen with an artistic colourful style to them. Some of the strobing on early songs is a bit strange visually, the sync is way off.

The set list however is great, a good choice of old and new combine into a 78 minute set. There's even a 4 minute intro with casual arty shots of Cleveland that set the tone and mood and some of the band members talking whilst sorting their instruments.

I have yet to listen to the CD audio disc and watch the documentary, which I'm sure the latter will make up for the disappointing live DVD. I just hope the sound was mixed a little better for the CD Audio, but I'm not holding and hope just in case. If the CD is as bad as the DVD, then the rating for the package would take another hit I'm afraid!!!
