A compilation which mixes the great with the downright ordinary. If the best moments from "Chill Brazil 2" were mixed with those from "Chill Brazil 1", you'd get an absolute killer double. As such, there's not enough truly great stuff to stretch this out into a double cd. However, the opening six-track salvo on cd one really means business. (Just as with this set's predecessor.) The trio of "Triste" by Joao Gilberto, the divinely sensual "Espelhos d'Agua" from Preta Gil and Milton Nascimento's "Ana Maria" is SENSATIONAL. (Almost justifying the purchase price alone.)

The overall quality dips, thereafter, and becomes rather hit-and-miss. Not everything is to my taste, but the first disc ends relatively well. In Soul's instrumental "Drum'n Bossa" is especially pleasing, clocking in at over six minutes. The perfect soundtrack for a late-night drive across the city, or down to the beach. (So long as it's a relatively exotic one!)

The second disc doesn't really have anything to match the first disc's highlights, despite a relatively strong start. The skip button will probably be seeing more action, in all honesty, after track five (Kaleidoscopio's "Tem Que Valer") or six. But there is some nice stuff on offer. The sultry "Ceu Lilas", the pretty "Nao Va Ainda", the sexy "Precisando de Amor", the joyful "Beleza e Cancao", the jazzy "Suite Norte Sul Leste Oeste" and the smoochy ending pair of "Outro Lado" and "Samba do Morro". (There is some good stuff in there, and i've just been moved into bumping up my rating a notch.)

An interesting sampler of "sexy soul bossa tracks", all in all, even if the contents will not be to everybody's satisfaction.

Great album!! 8 Aug 2006

The other reviews are good enough, but I just wanted to give this CD 5 stars because it is so good. I like Chill 1, but this is my favorite of the 3 CD's in this series. Several of the songs (by Preta Gil & Joyce) were so good that I got their individual albums. Some songs are new (to me!) and some are old songs remade, but all are terrific!

Solid Double Disc CD of MPB 14 Nov 2003
By bordersj2 - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Audio CD
I find the previuos review very helpful - however I actually enjoyed this one a bit better than the first. The first one, compiled by Marcos Valle, was solid but had some pretty iffy tracks on there. This one, compiled by Joyce, is a bit better than that one through in through. The compilation is made by WEA International, is a double disc set of some musica popular Brasil (MPB) and some older Bossa Nova.

It features some of the legendary singers and songwriters of Brazil along with some of the not so publicized contemporary artists or popular artists through the years. You'll see Jobim, Joao Gilberto, Milton Nascimento, Hermeto Pascoal, Gilberto Gil's tunes in there along with Bebel Gilberto, Kaleidoscopio, Preta Gil, Sonia Rosa, Tania Maya, Zuco 103 and the like. The musical styles range from MPB to some classic Bossa Nova and in the end, CD 1 is stronger than CD 2.

In the end, this is a solid compilation which I think is stronger than the first Chill Brazil. I like how some of the old tunes are mixed here, and the classic Jobim sound. My favorite cut is, well, the Joyce exclusive which has hints of her classic "Feminia" written all over it. Gilberto Gil's "O Lugar Do Nosso Amor" is also cool - I liked the hint of "So Tinha De Ser Com Voce" in it even then. My gripe? Well, again, it's not the strongest of MPB, and was including Marcos Valles "Crickets Sing for Ana Maria" an oversight? (it's track 12 on his Chill Brazil). Finally - WEA released a few other cd's mixed by Eddy De Clercq titled "Boss-A-Troniq" and "Boss-A-Troniq II". They're pretty solid new Bossa Comps which feature Towa Tei, Nicola Conte, EBTG, Truby Trio, etc. - music popular in 2000-2001.

Not Bad....Not Great. 3 Nov 2003
By M. Katayama-Lee - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Audio CD
I was disappointed with this CD, because I got the previous release, "Chill: Brazil 1" and enjoyed that thoroughly. This collection is not bad, however it's not nearly as good as the first one released. It was compiled by legendary singer, Joyce (whose songs are by far the best of the CD). There is also a great song by Azymuth on here, "Tamborim, Cuica, Ganza e Berimbau", which is definitely worth checking out, however it's probably better to buy the Azymuth CD that has that song, then to buy this whole album. There are other really good songs on here, but it all depends on if you want to buy a CD for ony 5 or 6 good songs (out of 38 - remember it's a double disc set).
