--"BOOKLIST, "Starred Review, November 1, 1989
The poems are oh-so familiar and the artwork extends the nostalgia; yet Cooper Edens' conception, choice of illustration, and the juxtaposition of the art and text on the page bring a new appreciation of both words and pictures. More than 100 selections from illustrators from the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries grace the crisp white pages in a pleasing mix of full color and black and white. The works, mostly taken from previously illustrated editions of Stevenson's famous collection, are by such well-known artists as Jessie Wilcox Smith, Charles Robinson, H. Willebeek Le Mair, Margaret Tarrant, and Willy Pogany. Sources and a short biography of the poet are appended. M. Dibdin Spooner's painting for "The Land of Counterpane" appears on the dust jacket, making an enticing invitation to enter Stevenson's rich and magical world; those who respond will cherish the experience.

Excellent introduction to poetry for children!,
This review is from: A Child's Garden of Verses (Puffin Classics) (Mass Market Paperback)
One of the great classics of children's verse, but this one deserves it's reputation 100% ! Great fun for children and an easy starting point for any parents who feel unsure about how to introduce poetry to thier children, It's the sort of book which may even pursuade "poetphobic" parents to reconsider their attitude.

More than just nostalgia,
By Trimalchio "newtrimalchio" (Salisbury) - See all my reviews
This review is from: A Child's Garden of Verses (Wordsworth Children's Classics) (Paperback)
I am just rediscovering this book with my daughters, having had it as a child myself. In doing so, many of these poems come flooding back, the words which were forgotten springing back to my mind. Unlike some books, though, which are nostalgic but lose their sparkle in adulthood, I now realise how well these modestly titled 'verses' work as poems. This is real poetry, entirely accessible to young children but also technically perfect, thoughtful, wistful and beautiful. Never trivialising or condescending, they capture perfectly a child's view of the world in a way that can enlighten parents as well as children.

This review is from: A Child's Garden of Verses (Puffin Classics) (Mass Market Paperback)
This book was bought for me by my father when i was about six years old. I used to learn poems from it and recite them to my mum. This is a lovely book for any child and even now, at nineteen, i still look throught this as it reminds me of my childhood. (The edition i have was illustrated by Brian Wildsmith- amazing colourful artwork-
