Pencil drawing illustrations, which start mostly in greys. Scenes of devastation, war damage and a barbed wire fence dividing here from there. It looks like the people over there won. Their buildings aren't blown apart. And they have trees; small specks of colour to punctuate the grey.
Against a backdrop that could be anywhere in the world where action spoke louder than words, comes a small boy.
His simple act: to nurture a small green shoot of life.
His rewards: a beautiful flourishing vine, butterflies, rainbow-coloured birds, children playing...and the attentions of the soldiers from over there who tear it all down.
His response: a silent collaboration with a girl from beyond the fence. They jointly tend and nurse a bigger, stronger vine which envelops the barbed wire fence with roots on either side.
This is a three hankie message of hope, of human spirit, of a small act of love and beauty defeating arsenals full of hate and ugliness. Stunning.
