1.0 out of 5 stars NOT suitable for Beginner Readers 23 Mar. 2014

The almost complete lack of punctuation is the first thing that disappoints me with this book.

The story is about a dog who decides to become a human and then considers what he would do for employment: It would not be possible to 'become' a king, I would not want to encourage my child to consider becoming 'a robber' as a vocation to aspire to, and am unclear how one would become a devil or an angel - all options considered.

Incidentally, I do not find it desirable to see a 'smart' dog with his leg cocked up actually urinating against a tree (with the accompanying text: Makes my needs on a tree).

I feel a bit mean commenting on the grammar in this book as it is clearly written by an author who's first language is not English, but the English is not adequate for me to share this book with my 'early reader' as it does not set the appropriate example.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Dog's Life! 8 Sept. 2013

S.I.A. takes a different and very entertaining stance for writing children's stories. Through a sound progression of images and ideas the author allows children to identify the significant `costumes' of various forms of jobs, places these on a sweet dog named Buddy and in doing so allows children to identify how special a dog as a friend of the family can be. By making the main character a dog the author allows a child's imagination to romp on how dogs might think situations through - and entertain at the same time.

Buddy is a smart dog who likes playing on the grass, chasing cats, and relieving himself on trees. But Buddy wonders why he can' t be more like a man - sitting on the toilet reading a newspaper while he relieves his needs, drinking water from a glass through a straw, and rest from work on the weekends - but of course first he must find a job: he visualizes himself as a doctor, a computer programmer, a famous singer, a fortune teller, a weightlifter, a hunter, a film producer, a fireman, a magician, a painter, a robber, a policeman, an accountant, a pirate, a devil, and angel, or even a King! But in the end Buddy realizes he is happiest at being a beloved pet dog - and children grow to appreciate their own pet dogs as unique and valuable just the way they are.

This is a well-illustrated book, easy to read for the early reader who benefits for visualization of words to learn, and carries with it a valuable lesson about the meaningful relationship between dogs and man and man and dogs! Grady Harp, September 13

This book was a disappointment. It is poorly written with many spelling and grammar errors. There should be a mechanism for Amazon to make sure books have been edited before they are put up for sale.

5.0 out of 5 stars "Every dog must have his day" - Jonathan Swift 9 Sept. 2013

It's common in children's stories to use personification to attribute human qualities to animals, while letting the animals retain their innate characteristics. But Buddy is such a smart dog that it's not enough for him to be a very smart dog - he wants to live like a human. So the story shows Buddy doing human things like reading the newspaper while sitting on the toilet instead of using the nearest tree. Buddy imagines himself having a human job like a doctor, fireman, or even being a king. In the end, though, he realizes that it's enough to just be a good and beloved dog.

The story should appeal to toddlers and preschoolers with its colorful illustrations of Buddy imagining himself in various human professions. The text is simple enough for youngsters to understand with the help of their parents as the story is read to them.
