Book Description

25 Sep 2009
'Children's Letters to God' is the unassuming national bestseller that has featured in Cardinal O'Connor's sermons, has been read by Oprah Winfrey to her viewers, and been given as a gift to over one million readers young and old. It is a wonderful portrait of how children view their world: a charming, funny and moving collection of letters expressing that part of a child's world reserved for special thoughts and wishes. Covering beliefs and desires to questions and doubts that are urgent and common to all children, many of the letters are disarmingly wise, others naive; some are knowing, some simple; some reverent, some not so reverent. All of them are addressed to God with much hope and trust. A truly uplifting book which provides a sometimes humorous, insight into the dilemmas, puzzlements, suggestions, wishes and complaints common to children everywhere.

Product Description

From the Author

From the Introduction:
'The letters in this book express that part of a child's world reserved for special thoughts and wishes. The subject matter ranges through those beliefs, desires, questions and doubts that are urgent and common to all children. Some of the letters are disarmingly wise, others naive;some are knowing, some simple;some reverent, some not so reverent. Many are weighted with seriousness;others are lit with smiles. All of them are addressed to God with much hope and trust.

Grownups know for certain, of course, that the letters will not get there no matter how much postage they carry. But then grownups know so much more than children- sometimes.

In choosing these letters, we've tried to convey the incredible variety they represent. Their spelling and grammar have not been corrected, for what they say they say better as they are.' --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

About the Author

Stuart Hample lives in New York. With two songwriters, he adapted 'Children's Letters'; into a small musical that had a six-month's run off-Broadway (see www.childrensletterstogod.com).

5.0 out of 5 stars Hurrah for the little ones!!! 2 Jan 1999
By A Customer
Format:Hardcover
If anyone doubts the sagacity of the kids, peruse through this little gem and realize once again to what curiosity inevitably concludes. This book, in my humble opinion, shouldn't be ignored by those weary of potential dogmatism; these are prescient, unhindered, spontaneous children after all. And at any rate, these really aren't questions of faith so much as those niggling questions or conundrums we all troubled over in youth. Buy this book and throw those overwrought and illogical coffee "tomes" to the wayside.

In the book, Childrens Letters to God, I found a new love of children. In this book, children under the age of ten share their innermost thoughts with God. The innocence of them all!! I was almost in tears at the thought that one day I was saying the same things. Even though the words are sparse, the meanings are deep.
Some people may not see the beauty in this book, but it is the sweetest thing I've ever read. Kids share their thoughts on how they think that God should have done things diferently, and how they want to know things like where babies come from and what they want done with their problems, and all sorts of things. I just fell in love with this book, and with the kids who wrote their very own, unique letters to God.

5.0 out of 5 stars A wonderful insight into the mind of a child 30 Nov 2004
Format:Hardcover
This book is small in size but big in enjoyment. The letters that these children have written to god are wonderful. They show how a child thinks and the naivety and wiseness with which they think. Who would have thought to ask god who does his job when he goes on vacation? This will bring a smile to your face from the moment you open the first page, and I highly recommend it to grown ups of all ages!

Kids say the funniest things - and this book proves it! This compilation of questions, comments and complaints addressed to God, whilst not an intellectually taxing read, will tug at your heartstrings and make you laugh out loud. Each letter, complete with grammatical and spelling errors, provides an insight into the mind of a child and what they feel is truly important. Some are more insightful than others, some are touching and some are downright hilarious! If I didn't know better I'd swear they were faked, but I probably woudn't care! By no means a literary masterpiece, but well worth reading and well worth a few quid.

Children's Letters to God is the type of book you read for enjoyment. This book gives you satisfaction that today in this world, children still believe in God and have questions for Him. As a religious education teacher, it is great to see the youth of today wanting to know more about their faith. This is an excellent book!!!!!

5.0 out of 5 stars A heartwarming look into the hearts of children! 16 Aug 1999
By A Customer
Format:Hardcover
This book is a refreshing reminder of the simplistic mind of achild, as we read how these little ones ponder who God really is and how He works. The questions posed and statements made by these children are heartwarming and often comical! I laughed through the whole book! A must read for a parent or teacher of children.
