Absolutely fabulous 9 Feb 2011
The Children's book of Art is a great way of looking at art. It gives a lot of practical information that kids just love, for example how paint is made, where do the colours come from. The theoretical information is brought in a fun and understandable way, doing justice to the history of art in general and talking about some individual artists from different media. I would recommend it to everybody.

This book is fun to look at and interesting. My kids studied some art in school and like the book to add to what they've learned plus I love looking at the pictures too.

Compelling intro to art for children 11 April 2011
By Only Sometimes Clever - Published on Amazon.com
A few months ago, I spied this book at the library, and thought it might be a good addition to our homeschool curriculum. A few days later, with myself and my 9yo in love with this book, I purchased it. We have been going through two pages daily, with frequent page-turning peeks to see what awaits us.

All eras of art are covered, both Western and global, primarily painting and sculpture, from ancient rock art to Damien Hirst, from da Vinci to street art. Like all DK books, this one is visually appealing, chock-full of illustrations and information. It proceeds roughly chronologically, covering eras and styles. It also covers topics like Animals in art, Children in art, Gods and heroes in art, War in art, and many others. There are also periodic suggestions for art projects for children.

This book is a wonderful, worthwhile, older-child-friendly introduction to art. I would gauge that it's appropriate for those ages 9+, given some of the serious and even disturbing bits of art history sprinkled throughout -- like Goya's gruesome and bloody depictions of Spanish wars, van Gogh's mental illness, and Hirst's obsession with death, among other touchy subjects. Still, difficult subjects are handled gracefully, with just enough explanation to satisfy curiosity and to explain what difficult artists (or styles) might be trying to convey.

This is currently my son's favorite book, and as we read through it together, we have both learned a ton, gaining new appreciation for art that may have previously been like a different language for both of us. As DK's Children's Book of Art has provided both the introduction and the translation for various artists and styles, we have both been thoroughly enjoying the process.
