Product Description

CD Description

· They made precious little impact at the time, but Brighton-based quartet the Mike Stuart Span have been lauded by collectors for at least a couple of decades now as one of the finest British psychedelic bands of the era.

· With their early 1968 single `Children Of Tomorrow' b/w `Concerto Of Thoughts' widely acknowledged as one of the best (and rarest - a copy recently sold on eBay for in excess of £700) examples of the genre, their recordings have appeared on numerous illegal releases as well as a limited edition, band-authorised mid-1990s anthology. However, licensing restrictions ensured that a definitive, all-encompassing Mike Stuart Span compilation remained an impossible dream.

· Until now, that is, because Children Of Tomorrow represents the Mike Stuart Span motherlode. Featuring every MSS studio recording known to have survived, it includes their brace of mod-soul singles for EMI and their notorious but little-heard stab at pop stardom with Fontana together with that superlative psych-pop 45 on Jewel and a host of demos in a similar vein.

· As a considerable bonus, we also feature a clutch of previously-unissued treasures: the only recording made by pre-MSS outfit the Mighty Atoms, a far more muscular radio session stab at Fontana A-side `You Can Understand Me' and two 1966 demos that effectively won the group their EMI deal. With previously unpublished photos and fresh quotes from band members Stuart Hobday and Gary Murphy, Children Of Tomorrow is the definitive Mike Stuart Span anthology

From their early days as a soul band to their emerging talents as a prog rock band, this is the entire studio output of Mike Stuart Span (not to be confused with their later material under the name of Leviathan).

For psche collectors, it's a MUST, as it illustrates perfectly how the group burst out from the restrictions imposed by their management to become one of the best British psychedelic bands of the 60s. Spine-tingling guitar work and tight arrangements show just how unlucky they were that success never came their way at the time. How ironic it is that their true worth has only been recognised by a later generation.

Having said that, there may be a surprise for northern soul addicts in the quality of their first two Columbia B-sides, as well as in two of the bonus tracks recorded as demos as an attempt to secure a record contract. This was during their period spent as a soul band and it is obvious that they were badly advised on the two A-sides that eventually emerged.

Accompanied by an amazingly comprehensive booklet, full of biographical detail, photographs and press cuttings, this is a great CD for anyone interested in what was going on under the radar in England during the best musical decade ever.

Great re-release 21 Aug 2011
This is a great re-release of some classic material by the Span. They were unsung heroes of their time and it was only bad luck that prevented them from being more well known then they are now. Buy this!

One of Britain's best kept secrets 11 Aug 2011

A BAND THAT ALMOST "MADE IT", BUT LEFT A FEW ERA DEFINING SONGS 22 May 2012
By Stuart Jefferson - Published on Amazon.com

I wasn't going to write anything about this album, especially since it's already been reviewed-but I couldn't resist. The sound is pretty good, though probably not digitally remastered from original tapes (it doesn't say), and the 15 page booklet is well done-with photographs, newspaper clippings, and period posters. But the essay contains many first person quotes from a couple of band members, and tells the story of the rise and fall of the MSS.

The music ranges from early Mod/soul take-offs of American music-with the use of a horn section which tends to dominate, to more guitar-centric sounds, then moves into a more psyche/rock sound. Songs include eight A/B singles, a couple of live tracks and some unreleased tracks from the period. Interesting facts include having a stereo single mixed by a deaf-in-one-ear producer, who would switch both headphones earpieces onto his good ear in order to hear all the music, but the mix was consequently a little off. Or having a band member walk out of a second story window while on acid. It's stories like these that bring back that era when it seemed that every band had a tale to tell. With a number of personnel changes, the band eventually morphed into LEVIATHAN-recording an album in 1969 for the Elektra Records label-to no avail.

Should this be at the top of your "to purchase" list? Not really. But if you like that whole era of British music, this album does have a certain sound and charm. It's a good example of music played by second/third tier bands who gave it a go and tried to persevere over sometimes overwhelming odds. At it's best, this album brings back memories of that whole era, and with a few pretty good tunes on this album, it's worth hearing. Fans of this music/era should check this out.

long overdue proper reissue 22 Aug 2011

this is a fantastic reissue, i have the mike stuart span reissue that came out about 5 years ago on the wooden hill label but this reissue adds a few more tracks i did not know about and the booklet is as good as wooden hills booklet but the remaster is a bit better on this, wow what a great psych outfit MSP was back on the 60s uk psych scene, this band went very underrated at the time and only seems to be getting the respect it deserved over 40 years ago in the past 10 years with the wooden hill cd release of this as well as the tenth planet lp reissue, to get all the tracks you need the cd, if you are anolog mad then the lp will serve you well, if you liked that whole london scene from 64 to 70 then this is for you, it has finally arrived, your ship has landed killer psych i cant say anymore!!!!!!!!
