Emotional Journey 4 May 2009
Children and Teenagers with Aspergers: The Journey of Parenting from Birth to Teens

I read this book through tear-filled eyes, most of the time. The writers' accounts of life bringing up a child with Aspergers mirrored my own experiences to an uncanny extent. I am the mother of a daughter with Asperger's Syndrome and the journey of our lives together has been every bit as extraordinary, exhausting and empowering as those described in the book. It was a revelation to me to realise that I am not alone in my experiences and I felt validated and relieved by being able to identify in this way. Being the parent of a child with this form of autism can be so lonely and isolating while the rest of the world rushes past.
Often books about people with autism are written by the so-called "experts" . How refreshing to read first-hand accounts which tell the tale just as it really is.
Quite apart from the content, the accounts are superbly written by the contributing authors and make for a riveting, if uncomfortable, read.
There's been a gap in the market for this sort of book and I'm so pleased I found it. Thanks for making me feel not quite so alone.

This book is an absolute 'must have' for any parent who is currently struggling to cope with the daily demands of looking after a child with AS - whilst at the same time feeling let down by the education system and the so called professionals that hold so much power over our childrens future. It is a powerfully moving account of the struggles faced by determined and loving families to obtain the help and education that their children so rightly deserve. Many of the accounts of the contributors in this book were a chilling reflection of my own experience with 'professionals' and teaching staff - many of whom appear to have very little experience of this syndrome. The stories are powerful in that they are a stark reminder that when our AS childrens' needs are not being met at school the consequences can be catastophic - not only for the child but for the wider family. Having experienced teacher bullying and parents disapproving glances over the years I sincerely wish this book had been available to me at an earlier stage when I really felt there was no hope for a brighter future for my son. I am grateful to the contributers for their total honesty about their feelings towards their children which I'm certain will come as a huge relief to many parents. Perhaps a copy of this book should be made available to all teachers/professionals in order that they may at least try to understand how difficult it can be to parent AS kids. We may then witness a kinder and more understanding approach to these wonderful children and their families!

The eleven stories written by parents of children and teenagers with Aspergers that form the backbone of this book are powerfully affecting. Through these narratives we see the lives of the individuals involved unfold over time and learn about the multiple challenges faced by the families. The difficulties fluctuate with the quality, quantity and appropriateness of the support - educational, medical and social - provided to these children, young people and parents. The accounts clearly highlight the immense benefits of good support, and the tragedies and suffering that occurs when this is lacking. We see the parents' passionate commitment to their children as they seek to create the best environments for them in a world that is often perplexed by these atypical young people. This book will help parents in similar situations to find strength and comfort through shared experience; it helps highlight the serious shortcomings in services used by children and young people with Aspergers; and will help friends and families to gain a deeper insight into parents' struggles and perspectives. The contributors describe their lives as being like living in `another country' or `on another planet' and the book provides a vivid picture of these worlds. The accounts end with the young people approaching adulthood and, the reader is left wanting to know more - what will happen to these parents and young people in the years to come? Like a dramatic, powerful and moving novel, interrupted and unfinished, the reader is left eagerly anticipating a sequel.
