5.0 out of 5 stars An exciting core novel for 8th grade girls AND boys!!!, 28 Jan 1998
By A Customer
This book was a required reading for my 8th grade English class, and although I scoffed at first because I thought the boys wouldn't like the "romance" portion of the book, in the end, it was the boys who were truly hooked. In fact, the greatest joy in finishing the book was the fact that all of my students wanted to know WHAT HAPPENED TO SUNDARA AND JONATHAN? Did they live "happily ever after"? What happened to Sundara's family? Did Mayoury come to America? I told the students that this book was fiction but they were so tuned into the main characters that they wanted to know more. Some even wanted to write to Linda Crew and ask her to write an epilogue to the story! Any book that gets 8th grade boys into reading is a MUST read! Hats off to Linda Crew!

4.0 out of 5 stars Very Good, but one Complaint, 24 Jun 1999
By A Customer
I loved this book so much, next to Walk Two Moons by Sharon Creech, and the sequel to it, Chasing Redbird, Children of the River was my favorite book. I had to read it for school and usually I hate to be forced to read. I hate having a deadline, but I just could not put this book Down!!! I got burried so deep into it, I felt like I was there! I felt for the characters. The only complaint I had was that I wish that the author had given me a better ending! She left me hanging! I wanted to know more about what happened to her parents and sisters and brothers! I was left unfufilled and curious, and I was disappointed. In all other aspects though, I loved it!!!

5.0 out of 5 stars One of the best books we have read., 16 April 1998
By A Customer
The thing we liked most was how Sundara came from Cambodia and she turned on her family to be with Jonathon, the one she loved. She went against her religion just to be with Jonathon. We would like to read more of Linda Crew's books because we think she is a very good writer. The way she told the story made us belive we were really there. We would most definitly recommend this book to other people because it teaches you about life and religions of a diffrent culture.Don't judge this book by the cover. We didn't want to read it beacause of the title. But in the end we loved it!!
