Amazon.co.uk Review

The murder rate is as high as an elephant's eye in Children of the Corn, a flaccid adaptation of Stephen King's short story. While driving through Nebraska en route to a new job, medico Burt (Peter Horton) and his wife Vicky (a pre-Terminator Linda Hamilton) nearly run over a mutilated boy who staggers from the cornfields. Seeking help, they enter the town of Gatlin, whose under-20 residents have butchered their parents per the decree of junior-grade holy-roller Isaac (John Franklin), who preaches the word of a being called "He Who Walks Behind the Rows". King's original story (from his 1978 collection Night Shift) was a lean and brutal mélange of Southern-Gothic atmosphere and EC Comics-style gore, which scripter Greg Goldsmith effectively neutralises by adding a youthful narrator (a grating Robbie Kiger) and putting an upbeat spin on the story's morbid conclusion. Fritz Kiersch's direction is TV-movie flat, with the sole inspired moment (hideous religious iconography glimpsed during a bloody "service") delivered as a throwaway. Aside from Horton and Courtney Gains (as Isaac's hatchet man Malachai), the performances are dreadful. The depiction of the monster-God as a sort of giant gopher inspires more laughter than terror. Amazingly, the film spawned six sequels; Franklin (Cousin It in the Addams Family films) later appeared in and wrote 1999's Children of the Corn 666.--Paul Gaita, Amazon.com

Product Description

Travelling through Nebraska, Burt (Peter Horton) and Vicky (Linda Hamilton) stop in a small town to report the death of a child on the highway. There, they discover something strange about the community: all the grownups are gone, and the children seem to belong to a strange cult. What's worse, it's a cult that sacrifices adults to the dreadful he who walks behind the rows ...

Malakai *makes* this film [though the midget in the Amish hat does stand around doing a good job of being evil -especially when coated with dust at the end:)]. The burning fields are cinematically superb, but the bottle throwing technique of the 'hero' [in the traditional sense, the hero for me will always be the man who has his hand forced into a blender at the beginning] leaves a lot to be desired. Enjoy whilst drunk for the ultimate experience, and prepare to be brainwashed into buying the whole series...I personally can't wait for "Children of the Corn 666:Isaac's Return". Beau.

Outlander! 6 Jun 2011

I'm surprised I'm giving Children of the Corn 5 stars as I've seen it in the past and did not remember it being as good as when I watched it again on DVD. But I can't fault it. I found the film scary, interesting and well cast. It's a true horror that reminded me of the great original Wicker man. As with the Wicker Man we are led into an isolated comunity where all is not right.
If you enjoyed The Stand and Salems Lot then you'll definately appreciate this 80's gem.
I've seen some of the sequals and I think it was them that had tarnished my memory of the original. I'd say avoid the sequals but get the original.
It's a good quality DVD with extras.

Malachai scares me... 18 Dec 2011
By BPR
Format:DVD
Children of the Corn is a movie that scared me senseless as a kid, in particular the character of Isaac played by John Franklin. As an out and out horror, there really isn't much in the way of blood and gore, but the way the kids are filmed, and how tense some of the moments feel when the adults (Linda Hamilton and Peter Horton) enter the town of Gatlin, puts this minor point at the back of your mind. My favourite scene is when Horton's Burt enters the church just as Amos is giving his blood as it is the first day of his nineteenth year, so must now die. If you're a fan of horror, and of the Stephen King story, this is recommended.

Children of the Corn
An old classic which hasn't aged in time. Still good to watch and own. A must see for any Stephen King fan or lover of 80s horror.

Wooden acting, zero suspense and cheapo effects. Poor.
The cast is wasted in this awful adaptation of Stephen Kings novel. The acting is wooden and mediocre from the two main leads and the direction is even worse. Read more
