5.0 out of 5 stars A beautiful book!, 3 Jun 1999
By A Customer
This is my favorite of all the Star Wars books, because it features prominently my two favorite characters, Luke and Callista. Unlike most of the other Star Wars books, whose main focus is on the action and intrigue, Children of the Jedi is at its heart, a love story between Luke and the Jedi spirit he meets on a mission. Their story was very touching, and I was really disappointed to find that subsequent books had chosen not to go further with this relationship. I wish they had found a way to keep Callista and Luke together. It would have been interesting to have a Jedi knight who may not have awareness of the force anymore, but could still be a Jedi.

I'm not sure why so many people hated the book, although I do acknowledge that its style is definitely not your "typical" Star Wars novel. Still, it is beautifully written, and I encourage those on the fence about reading it to go ahead and read it!

4.0 out of 5 stars Best non-Zahn Star Wars book I've read., 27 May 1999
By A Customer
Timothy Zahn remains the master of Star ars fiction, but Hambly is a reasonably close second. Unlike some of the other contributors (Kevin Andrson springs to mind), she can actually write. Unlike Anderson, Hambly doesn't keep repeating synopses of what happened 10 pages ago. She writes in a spare, elegant style. She merges romance and suspense in ways that will not appeal to the more juvenile Star Wars fans, who just seem to want shoot-em-ups, but that will appeal to grown-ups. What I especially liked about this book was the picture of Luke as both physically and emotional vulnerable. In too many of the other books, he comes off as implausibly all-powerful. In sum, ignore the bad reviews and decide for yourself.

3.0 out of 5 stars sound storyline, but incredibly confusing......., 20 Jan 2007
By leathercharmer "leathercharmer" (jersey, channel islands) - See all my reviews
To continue from the title, this book has a very sound storyline, however, it does become incredibly complex and confusing at times. I found this mainly due to the uber-descriptive and compound complex sentences this book is teeming with.

Barabara Hambly is rightly recognised as a brilliant science fiction writer, what she has forgotten (this is me taking a wild guess) is that the main audience for this book is teenagers who are not keen on such complex narrative. Or it could be the fact that this book is really slow and loses the plot. I found myself going back again and again to remind myself what the hell was going on.

And another thing; it took me 2 months to finish this book. Thats how frustatingly slow it can be. This is partly due to me not being able to find time to read this book. When i did have time to kill, I just couldnt be bothered because I was so bored of it. Over all this book has been terribly disappointing, it does nothing to add to the expanded universe. but my interpretation of this book is that it does show Luke progress from a mere jedi master to a GRAND jedi master. Thats something for all star wars fanatics to argue about.

I would'nt bother reading this book, just jump to the corellian trilogy instead, its hell of a lot better.
