Product Description

Review

The author/illustrator of this book has come up with a novel method of inspiring interest in the solar system. The book opens with a full page representation of the sun, with an extended caption describing its structure, temperate and dimensions. The remaining pages have large circles cut in them, through which, as seen through a telescope in space, it is possible to view and read about each of the planets, satellites and asteroids in order of their distance from the sun. This visually compelling book with enthral and entertain readers at the top end of Key Stage 2. (Junior Education )

The book opens out like a tunnel through space, enabling readers to tour the planets. Each page contains brightly coloured illustrations and essential information about the planets, the Sun and the asteroid belt. Fun facts include the length of each planet’s year, day and its maximum distance from the Sun. This is a great book to use with the whole class. (Junior Focus )

This book pulls out into a huge representation of our solar system. Each planet is described in detail giving distances, diameters, angles, circumferences and so on. For example, did you know that the Sun's temperature is about 15,000,000 degrees C. A great journey into the stars. (David Betty Bookmark ) --This text refers to the Paperback edition.

Product Description

3-d space book 3 Nov 2010
By broxi
Format:Pop-Up|Amazon Verified Purchase
My first impression of the book was -tiny. The book is just under 4" across. My second thought was, it is not really a pop up. Instead it has a cut out circle on each page with one planet on each, except the one facing a brilliant photo of the sun, and one showing an asteroid belt. Although I was a little bit disappointed, the book does have beautiful illustrations, and at least it was cheap enough. At this point my son saw the book so it was some time before I was able to browse any further, but basically that is it. The text is very limited giving some basic stats on each planet such as circumference, atmosphere, core, distance from the sun, length of days and years etc..

My son had no idea he was getting this so he was not expecting a pop up or anything else. Perhaps that led him to appreciate this book more than I initially did. He quickly sat down with it and began looking through the pages, tracing the planets with his fingers and stretching the book out and folding it up ( it stretches out like an accordion). After awhile he wanted it read to him and then sat down exploring it again. The next day I picked it up to read to him and was surprised that he instead pointed out each planet and gave me it's name. He has just come in and told me this is the best space book because he likes the way the pages go together. I think he means the 3-d effect of the planets.

Even my two year old has enjoyed this book, although he certainly does not know what he is looking at, and it is a book both children will seek out and sit down with themselves. It is also well made with thick sturdy card pages. Because of the reaction of my sons to this book, it's reasonable price, and the fact that I am pleased he learned his planets so easily, I have reconsidered my hasty judgement.
I would highly recommend this book now, both to introduce children to teh wonders of space, and just a love of reading. I have given this book 5 stars only because Amazon will not allow me to give it 10. Very highly recommended.

Interesting Concept 6 July 2000
By A Customer - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback
I like this book because of the fact that it's format is not traditional. I love seeing interesting subjects, such as the planets, presented in an interesting way so as to capture both the child's and adult's imagination. This book does it all. The illustrator, Arthur L'Hommedieu, shows us the planets - and asteriods! - from the sun's view, in perspective, as a tunnel. You open up the book to a vivid view of the solar system, then page by page read pertinent information on each planet, as well as getting a single view of it. Stretch the book out a little, as it is accordion-style, for a stunning 3-D view! I recommend this over any other children's book on the planets. It's not a dry rehashing of scientific information - it's FUN!
Incorrectly Assembled 31 Dec 2011
By A Customer - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback|Amazon Verified Purchase
This 21 page hard cover book was not correctly assembled in China. Pages 12, 15, 16, 17 and 18 are included twice. Pages 1 thru 6 and page 9 are missing entirely. Therefore, planets Mercury and Venus are missing and the "see-thru" effect from the Sun to Pluto is ruined. Our Grandson was disappointed on Christmas Day.
Breathtaking! *Ü* 19 April 1999

"Children of the Sun" is one of a kind. It's fascinating - for the children as well as the adults, for the facts stated in it are not common knowledge that is easily obtained, but a product of extensive research, outlined in a comprehensive and assesible manner. The artwork is simply splendid! It is colorful, which would most certainly appeal to the children, but it is also educational and realistic and may be helpful to teenagers and even adults. The paper engineering composing the book is simply unique. It allows it to be Child's play, as well as the educational instrument. Applause to Mr. Arthur J. L'Hommendieu!
