Product Description

Reprinted to tie in with the sequel, this collection of novellas from Scotland's emerging writers of the 90s contains the first sci-fi story by Irvine Welsh, and a bizarre tread through Scottish surrealism in the form of spaced-out crematorium attendants and vengeful traffic-wardens.

Format:Paperback
A brilliant insight into football supporting counter culture and all that surrounds it by some of the best contemporary writers out there published by arguably the most forward thinking publishing house in the country. Read this book, laugh, cringe and understand!

Roving eye. 27 Mar 2001
By A Customer
Format:Paperback
This is a compendium of writing by six young(ish) Scottish writers. Out of all the pieces here, the one by Alan Warner, After The Vision, is easily the best, combining his usual dark Highland poetry with strange, damaged, disturbing characters. And as for the other six? Well, they all succeed or fail to varying degrees, but the Laura Hird story is probably the second best here. The Irvine Welsh is tedious nonsense, and as for the rest of the book...forget it. But it's worth buying just for the Warner section alone.

To be quite honest, I read only the first two stories. Sci-fi has stopped to be my favourite genre since my teenage days. Despite everything I read, I like Pop, simply because it's a fairy tale of sort. And I like it, despite those who claim that only grim realism is worth reading. On the other hand, After the Vision is a good story too, though certainly not a happy ending one. Only while reading it I got an impression that the main character wanted to escape from what he sees. So did I, the reader. That tells a lot.
