This is one of the best, most compassionate films ever made in Russia. It is part of a trilogy - beginning with Gorky's Childhood, then My Apprentiship, and ending in My Universities. These tongue-in-cheek titles hide the reality of Gorky's deprived upbringing, where tragedy is interlaced with great moments of humour.
