This strong novel is impossible to put down. An impressive debut that explores relationships with confidence, pace and style. --This text refers to the Hardcover edition.

Product Description

Jules is passionate about acting and has been given the chance to star as the lead role in the play, Northern Lights. But at home, her life is not so happy. Her family starts to disintegrate after her father suddenly and unexpectedly leaves home. What exactly is Jules's relationship to her flamboyant actor uncle? And what terrible secret is her mother hiding? This is a moving and powerful story of one girl's search for her own identity, deftly contrasted with the glamour and excitement of the theatre. --This text refers to the Paperback edition.

A friend recommended this book to me. In this book, the main character, Jules, discovers a horrible secret about her family, that will change her and the people around her's lifes dramatically. I liked the way that there was also quite a bit about Jules starring in "The Northern Lights" the play, as the main story-line dragged a bit in places. The book feels as if it could be real, which I think is an important element in this type of book. I thought the plot was good, but a little too predictable. I would recommend this book to people aged 13 and up who enjoy a thought-provoking story-line.

This is a fantastic read! From the first page, you can't help but warm to Jules, (called Brick-Face at school because of her blushing.)

When Jules reads about the audition for Northern Lights, she dreams of getting the part of Lyra, little anticipating the real-life drama unfolding at home.
Her dad, is usually 'the best laugh in the world.' Now he's hardly smiling. When he leaves home taking his CDs but leaving behind a favourite photo of his daughter, Jules's world takes a bewildering turn. At first she blames her mother. Suspecting her of having an affair, she imagines horrible punishments for her.
'Chinese water torture. Boiling Oil.'

This is a book which will make you laugh and cry. Lee Weatherly writes with a crackling warmth, energy and humour, that kept this reader turning the pages to the end in one sitting. Brilliant Stuff.
