I started reading this book on Saturday night and finished it on Monday afternoon, I just couldn't put it down (but sadly working and sleeping kinda meant I had to for a short while).
Soname's account of how life was for a Tibetan living under the Chinese rule was fascinating, but the fact that this was a child's account made it all the more interesting.... I have always been interested in Tibet as I am Buddhist, but it isn't always easy to get first hand accounts of what life is like for the Tibetans because the Chinese censor everything with their strict communist rules.
Reading Soname's accounts of day to day living on the rooftop of the world, reading about sky burials and about pilgrimages to religious places was just captivating; I know a lot about the Tibetan way of life through reading absolutely anything I can get my hands on, so apart from Sanome's incredible story of escape and inner strength this book was just incredible.
I feel this book has changed me, I feel truly humbled, I will never complain about my lot in life or money worries again, I have clearly been blessed to be able to afford to live in a nice house, own a car and bring my daughter up myself. When I compare the desperation and isolation that Soname has had to go through to get where she is today I realise just how shallow and selfish my outlook can be.
This book has been an education for me, I practice Zen Buddhism, but I need to devote myself a lot more than I do (I don't meditate regularly these days) so that I may be able to help people, if I'm a better, more even tempered person then the people I meet may benefit from my positivity and openness.
If you want an inspiring story, a story of a positive mind, pure heart and a dream of a better future, then this is the book for you.
