Product Description

Review

'Different, fresh and arresting. What Harry Ferguson does better than anyone else is capture the actualité of front-line child protection work. The book is so unlike any other in the busy market place of child protection books, it should have no difficulty sticking its head above the crowd. It is utterly distinct in terms of its willingness and ability to talk about the job in terms of how it looks, feels, smells and sounds as practitioners move between office, car and home.'
- David Howe, Professor Emeritus, School of Social Work and Psychology, University of East Anglia, UK

"I was very impressed by this book. In fact, I'd go as far as to say that it includes some of the most interesting and original writing about social work and child protection I have seen. It is a strength of the book that the author is prepared to set out his own position on the line. This makes it enjoyable, stimulating and challenging to read."
- Chris Beckett, Senior Lecturer in Social Work, University of East Anglia, UK

"Harry Ferguson brings to life the embodied experience of child protection work. Combining historical research with contemporary accounts of frontline practice, Ferguson urges us to understand child protection work as a highly skilled and embodied practice, and offers powerful insights into the complex nature of authority, relationship building and decision-making. This book should be essential reading for anyone seeking to understand the challenges facing child protection workers today, and what is needed to create the conditions for better child protection practice."
- Karen Healy, Professor, School of Social Work and Human Services, The University of Queensland, Australia

"a 'must read'... This book offers a unique perspective on child protection that engages the reader in an immediate, honest and compelling fashion."
- Gillian Ruch, Division of Social Work Studies, University of Southampton

'As might be expected from a leading social work academic and author, this book makes a significant contribution to the child protection literature. It should be read by all social work students as well as practitioners working in this challenging field and every social work office should have a copy.'
-British Journal of Social Work

'Compelling'
- Child and Family Social Work

'The book is well written and thought-provoking, sympathetically capturing the essence of front-line child protection work...This highly original and stimulating book is a breath of fresh air, recommended not just for front-line practitioners but for all those who manage, train, support and appraise them.' - Catherine Webley, Nagalro-Children Seen and Heard

Product Description

How do practitioners step up to the professional challenge of keeping children safe?

Leading author Harry Ferguson draws on his own research, personal experience and real-life case studies to challenge the way we think about child protection. This highly original and engaging book captures the daily reality of practice within life's most personal spaces, and offers a rare insight into the lived experience of working with vulnerable children, their parents and other carers.

Blending diverse ideas from across the social sciences, the book addresses some of the key issues faced by practitioners today:
■ How do you navigate the private areas of a child's life – their home, their bedroom, their emotional world?

■ What do you do when confronted with parents or carers who are resistant, aggressive or deceitful?

■ Why is appropriate touch an essential element of relating to children, and how can you develop the professional resilience to use it effectively?

An inspiring declaration of the need for a new, intimate approach to child protection, this ground-breaking book lays the foundations of skilful, authoritative practice. It is a must for any student or practitioner within this challenging field.

Harry Ferguson has written a unique and important book for anyone involved in child protection work. Most books in this field tend to be rather abstract and uninspiring; framed by theoretical models, policies, legislative duties and driven by `good practice' guidance. It is rare indeed for a book in this most difficult aspect of professional practice to even begin to convey the lived experience of going into a strangers home to undertake a child protection investigation. This book does just that through an accessible and engaging style that delivers uncommon common-sense accounts of child protection workers from personal perspectives: people on the move in and out of offices, cars and homes; struggling to stay in touch with their feelings; being both comfortable and uncomfortable in their role; developing skills in their interactions and building effectiveness in their professional authority.

The arguments towards `intimate child protection practice' will be recognisable by anyone who has practiced in child protection before the inexorable growth of information gathering systems increasingly rooted workers to their desks and computers. A return to psycho-social life-worlds, as people engage with other people and their children, is long overdue.

If you are a student, current practitioner or supervisor then this is required reading. This book is to be welcomed and celebrated.

I bought this after recommendation from a colleague. It is well written and descriptive, and discusses the real experience of social work. I would highly recommend this for any newly qualified workers. Its also a very easy read.

I started reading this thinking it was quite fanciful but really it is practical and so down to earth. It deals with the emotional responses to undertaking social work and gets you to think about your own actions and feelings and what prompts them.

It will be getting quoted often in my MA assigments this year.
