How to achieve your child's full potential

Product Description

What makes children intelligent, resourceful, creative and flexible? Their minds are the powerhouse for everything they think and do and are shaped crucially by the knowledge they gain when they are very young. At the very beginning, newborn babies are ready and eager to learn, but by the time children start school, five years later, many will have lost their all-embracing excitement for learning. So what can you do to hone your children's skills? How can you improve their motivation, concentration and intelligence? "Child of Our Time: Brain Child" is an essential guide for parents and will help you achieve what everyone wants - the very best for your child. This book will help you discover: how to keep your child motivated to learn from babyhood onwards; how your learning style influences your child; how to improve your child's memory and concentration; how to help your child learn to read; how to prepare your child for school; how to help your child learn, whether maths or art, through the early school years; and what to do so your child gains a love of learning that will last a lifetime. Using cutting-edge research in neurology, psychology, genetics and sociology together with the personal experiences of the families featured on BBC1's "Child of Our Time" series, Dr Tessa Livingstone, herself a mother of two, guides parents through the crucial period in a young child's life that will shape their intelligence and their future.

Following an introduction to the Child of Our Time children, this book is divided into chapters on pregnancy and birth, the first three months, three months to a year, 1-2, 2-3, 3-4 and 4-5.

The book is a lavish production: full colour throughout, loads of photos and interesting quotes from the Child of Our Time parents. Its real value, though, is in all the practical parenting tips, techniques, benchmarks and experiments.

More than a book of a TV series, this is a great how-to manual for parents, underpinned by thorough research. Just flipping through the 2-3 year old chapter now, there are tips and ideas on exercise and activity, feeding styles and food refusal, memory, finding out your child's sense of pride, curing irrational fears, how to praise, a language checklist, games to play with 2-year-olds, discipline tactics, tantrum tips, sleeping and nightmares.

Each chapter is packed with just about everything you want to know about what's going on with your child's development for the age they're at. And if you've watched the show and want to recreate some of the experiments, many of them are in the book. Even at almost 400 pages it's very readable, and there's a thorough index if you want to dip into it for a particular problem.

Having seen the parents and children in the book featured in the TV series, this book is very real-world and an inspiration to read. If you have a child under five, or are thinking about it, this is a great one-stop parenting reference book.

I bought this book to understand the development of my 5 month old niece. It's been terrific to be able to observe her behaviour and responses, and to understand them better. This book helps enlighten you, and gives you a better perspective of things and very simply what's going on. My brother and his wife have enjoyed reading it too, and I would strongly recommend this book as a helpful tool for new parents.

I'm currently 36 weeks pregnant & got this book as it focused on the unborn baby aswell as the 1st few years.

As its linked to Robert Winston I found the familiar name reassuring, as some of the books seem to have conflicting advice. It provided a different angle to some of the books which focus more on exactly what you should expect when, as it included a bit more interesting background information about genetics aswell as what you should expect, but more importantly why, which is different to many of the books on the market.

I found this an interesting & useful read, & its also well laid out & easy to flick to the bits you want.
