Too much too soon 20 May 2012
By Richard
Format:Audio CD
First off the title is incredibly stupid.Betty Lavette was on Atlantic in the early 60s and My Man A Sweet Lovin' Man her first single. Its a wonder Atlantic persevered with her as there were no hits and even her next labels only saw Let me Down Easy (Calla) bubbling under.
Her one single issued here was I Feel Good (not the James Brown song) and that was in 1968.
With more awareness of Soul since the 70s doesn't make Betty Lavette a child of the 70s-she's a child of the 60s who survived to date
While Jan Bradley has yet to appear on CD and left the business in the late 60s to become a care worker the facts are that there are at least 10 CDs bearing her name though I don't think she made an album before at least the late 90s.
Though the only CD I have is The Great British Songbook I gave this 3 stars because I know who she is and probably have stuff on various pen drives.
Her profile today was given a massive boost when she appeared at President Obama's inauguraion and cut an album with the Drive By Truckers but she remains no more than a Cult Artist
Can you imagine our Prime Minister or any of them from the past boosting up the careers of a British cult artist? David Cameron talks about what's on his ipod which is mainly rubbish and Tony Blair was in a previous life a Mick Jagger impersonator

Queen of Bluesy Soul 19 Jun 2010
Format:Audio CD
To many the seventies was a time of tacky pop records and disco. The quality of this set puts the record firmly straight;much of the finest pop music ever made comes form the seventies and the fact that Ms. Lavette is still singing and performing is testament to this fact. The quality on offer within this disc is really quite amazing and it has been a pleasure for me to research and locate much of the seventies blues, soul, gospel and funk from the first half of the decade and each of these genres are represented within this CD.There is some really amazing compilations about which have educated me on much of the music I missed as a child/teenager wrapped up in T.Rex/Bowie/ Elton John etc. which where the type of music played in our house at the time.
Each track on this album stands up on its own as a fine record although some of the over produced tracks like 'All The Black ans White Children' do have a kind of Seventies Broadway feel to them. Some standards are included which get the Lavette treatment (It Ain't Easy-is this the original? I don't think so).The sensational ballad 'Your Turn To Cry' must be up there as a female answer to When A Man Loves a Woman. The emotion in the voice is great.Indeed it is the ballads that really stand out for me on this set. Ms. Lavette where have you been all my life? This stuff is truly great! If you like Aretha,Betty Wright, Dusty or Marlena Shaw you really should buy this.

Unheard Sounds From The Past Are A Blast 2 Mar 2008
By Jeremy Shatan - Published on Amazon.com

From the opening bars of her lowdown gritty take on "It Ain't Easy" (also covered by Bowie), Betty Lavette demonstrates her raw talent and virtuoso versatility on these cuts, many previously unreleased in any form. Whoever made the decision at Atlantic Records to shelve this record back in the 70's did Lavette and us a huge disservice.

Every cut gets the full on Muscle Shoals treatment, with horns, strings, electric sitar, etc. The arrangements are brilliant, the songs well-chosen. If you like funky soul (all you Sharon Jones fans!) this record is essential. Had it been released when it was recorded, I think it would be remembered as one of the best records of the 70's.

Buy it - only 7,500 in print!!

Classic..... 15 Oct 2008

Bettye Lavette came on to my radar with her last two albums and I saw her live this summer. She has got it! Great recordings that have that 70s soul sound to bad we had to wait so long for them. Great for fans of old school soul. Can't wait for more material.

Great Discovery 21 May 2009

I was woefully ignorant of this artist until the recent Kennedy Center Honors. Her performance of the Who's Reign O'er Me was outstanding. This record, recorded 30+ years ago, captures a rare artist not enough people know about today. Talk about life not being fair! She should be a household name, and a lot wealthier!!
