Spain released, PAL/Region 0 DVD: LANGUAGES: English ( Dolby Digital 2.0 ), Spanish ( Dolby Digital 2.0 ), English ( Subtitles ), Spanish ( Subtitles ), WIDESCREEN (1.66:1), SPECIAL FEATURES: Black & White, Interactive Menu, Scene Access, SYNOPSIS: Produced by Stanley Kramer, A Child is Waiting is set in an institution for the mentally handicapped, with many actual residents playing supporting and bit roles. Doctor Burt Lancaster and instructor Judy Garland often find themselves at odds over teaching methods, with Garland preferring an intense one-on-one approach with her students. Bruce Ritchey, a non-developmentally challenged youth, plays the retarded son of Gena Rowlands and Steven Hill, whose intellectual and social progress becomes the focal point of the film. The most uplifting sequence in A Child is Waiting takes place during a play staged by the genuinely handicapped children for their parents; while director John Cassavetes gilds the lily with close-ups of the teary-eyed audience, the kids themselves are earnest, engaging, and totally devoid of self-pity. According to Stanley Kramer, Judy Garland left her best work in this film on the cutting room floor; whenever completing a scene in which she'd exercised professional restraint, she'd insist upon a retake, then resort to the sobbing and breast-beating that her fans had come to expect. ...A Child Is Waiting

3.0 out of 5 stars Kramer vs. Cassavetes 18 Sep 2011
By The CinemaScope Cat TOP 500 REVIEWER
Format:DVD|Verified Purchase
When a new teacher (Judy Garland) joins the staff of a school dedicated to teaching mentally challenged (what used to be called retarded) children and young adults, she immediately clashes with the director (Burt Lancaster) of the institution over his methods. The film was directed by the inventive John Cassavetes but it was produced by uninventive Stanley Kramer and they clashed over the direction the film was taking as well as its "message". Alas, as the producer Kramer won by firing Cassavetes. The film is overtly sentimental and rather dubious in its sociological theories. But Cassavetes left his mark on the film, principally on the excellent performances. Garland, in particular, gives a sensitive nuanced performance but there's also excellent work from Gena Rowlands and Steven Hill as the divorced parents of a disturbed child who Garland takes under her wing. The film benefits by using actual disabled children rather than professional child actors playing mentally challenged although I did spot Billy Mumy (LOST IN SPACE) in there. The score by Ernest Gold is rather good except for a pretentious main title (percussion and a cacophonous children's chorus). With Paul Stewart, Elizabeth Wilson, Lawrence Tierney, Barbara Pepper and Juanita Moore.

The Optimum DVD via Great Britain is a nicely rendered transfer with an 1.66 aspect ratio.

This is a very touching film, Garland and Lancaster performances are first class. His ideas about how the children should be treated and taught win in the end but she brings the tenderness that the children need that seems to have been lacking before she started working at the school. Great dramatic performces all round.

This is a very moving film with sensitive performances all round.

Garland here proves what a great serious actress and talent she is - it is such a shame more of this type of work was not recorded by her. A truly stunning performance.
