Review

'This is an important and impressive book and an invaluable contribution to the field.' - Anna Flanigan, YoungMinds Magazine

'This book is clearly organised and accessible, making it easy for the practiioner to consult relevant sections...Howe's final sentence sums up the message of this generally excellent book: 'if relationships are where things developmentally can go wrong, then relationships are where they are most likely to be put right.' - Jeanne Kaniuk - Adoption and Fostering

'A scholarly and very readable piece of work that will be of interest to academics as well as clinicians.' - Journal of Advanced Nursing

'There are some books that you pick up and think, " I really ought to read that" and you approach them with a sense of dread mitigated only by grim determination. And then you start reading them, and you're hooked. This book was one of them.' - Accord Magazine for the Association of Christian Councellors

Product Description

This exciting new book offers a survey of the field of child abuse and neglect from the perspective of modern developmental attachment theory. The book opens with an account of the theory and describes the ways in which attachment difficulties manifest themselves in children's behaviour. The following three sections look at abuse, neglect, and compound cases of abuse and neglect, backing this up with empirical research evidence and vivid case material. The final section provides a comprehensive review of attachment-based interventions. This is a clear and compelling textbook, anchored in research evidence and geared in its structure to answer the kinds of questions practitioners and student practitioners specialising in child welfare are most likely to ask.

A really useful book 23 Mar 2009

Format:Paperback
I think that this book is great, it provides the reader with an easily digestable understanding about the importance of attachment. It also provides insight into the effects of maternal mental health, poverty, neglect etc and a section on age appropriate interventions.

David Howe is the master of attachment. This is a fantastic book giving examples and case studys of attachment. All other books focus on a infants attachement but not this one. Howe gives clear examples of attachment disorders in older children assisting in the ability to recognise attachment disorders in older children. This book is a must for professionals working with chilren and families.Child Abuse and Neglect: Attachment, Development and Intervention
