I am doing a kitchen/bath addition to our lake house and have used 3-D Home Architect in the past. It was a decent entry level program and extremely easy to use but had a lot of limitations. Then I found out that it had been redesigned by Chief Architect as a DIY program called Home Designer Architectural and thought I would give it a whirl. It turns out to be nothing less than perfect for what I needed. It is extremely intuitive and user friendly with drag and drop interface that makes designing house additions and new construction relatively easy and fun, if you're into that sort of stuff. There's a tremendous amount of detail, logic and resources within the program that not only does just about anything you want, but inspires you to maximize your designs so there are no corners left unturned. The 3-D is awesome and allows you to do a full overview of the design and toggle a camera view perspective where you can spin the design in space and see all the angles (I caught lots of mistakes with this). You can set up defaults for just about anything (which really takes the tedium out of repeated functions)and extensive libraries of furniture, fixtures, wood types and colors, etc that can all be re-sized easily. It even lets you define a wall with dimensions that include every layer, ie: drywall, OSB, stud width, siding, etc! It lets you look at the framing, at various elevations and lots of other stuff that I haven't even used yet. Then it generates a complete materials list that allows you to price out how much everything is going to cost. I showed my design to a builder in Indiana for an estimate and he was blown away at how through it was, and I have passed the floor plan on to an architect who will make the building plans so I know everything is good as far as stress loads, etc. It even has a landscape/terrain design function that I have yet to master and appears to be the only awkward, unintuitive function of the program. As far as customer service/support, I've always gotten through to someone immediately and had questions answered quickly. I bought the program a couple of months ago and they were kind enough to give me a free upgrade that was just released. Believe me, I've tried several other architectural programs and there's pretty much no competition if you ask me.
