This is a superb, moving soundtrack to a truly superb, moving and outrageously romantic film, as only the love story between two Afro-Cuban jazz musicians could be. The album stands on its own as a great advertisement for Afro-Cuban jazz, but after seeing the movie it becomes even more devastatingly touching and uplifting. If that sounds like an over-the-top critique, then it is only appropriate to one of the great romantic films and albums of recent years. A triumph, both film and album, for all concerned. The song "A Mayra/Lily", repeated over and over as it is, will have you crying--and crying for more before the album is over. At least that was my reaction--a wonderful gift from Bebo Valdes, Idania Valdes, Trueba, Mariscal, and all who came together to make this piece of great art.
