Review

This has to to be THE book for anyone with an interest in moving to Spain or trying to make out what life is like here.

A very well written and extremely funny book by Victoria Twead, who is an Eye on Spain member and often hangs out around the forums.

This is Victoria's tale of hers and Joe's move from Southern England to Southern Spain, full of fun and frolics and with a wonderful array of characters that amuse the reader from start to finish.

Highly recommended and perfect for getting any "scrooge" laughing at Christmas.

Justin Aldridge --Eye on Spain, November 2009

Victoria Twead writes a fantastically funny tale of five years living as reluctant chicken farmers in a small village in Almería in Southern Spain. "Chickens, Mules and Two Old Fools" is an hilarious rib-splitting read from beginning to end.
We are introduced to village characters, both animal and human, ache for the trials endured by poor Joe, and find ourselves laughing on every page wishing the end wouldn't come quite so soon. We meet characters such as Mother, a spliff-smoking 85 year old sex-kitten, and her daughter Judith, a larger-than-life expat who keeps ten dogs. `That one's called "Half", dear. Always said we'd never have ten dogs, so now we have nine and a "Half".'

But that's not all. Woven into the story are a number Spanish recipes given to Vicky by characters in the book and the village ladies. No wonder HarperCollins described the book as `charming' as well as `hilarious' and `laugh-out-loud funny'. If you liked Chris Stewart's "Driving over Lemons", you won't regret reading Victoria Twead's "Chickens, Mules and Two Old Fools".

Take it from me, this is one paperback that should be on every bookshelf and I know people will be talking about B***** and F***, two of Vicky's hens for years to come.

Andrew Camerón --RondaViva Lifestyle Magazine, October 2009

If you're looking to experience sunny Spain, and maybe even life in a tiny village tucked in the Alpujarra Mountains, and without leaving home, then Chickens, Mules and Two Old Fools is for you.

Approaching retirement, Vicky and her husband, Joe, one day decide to pack up their bags and leave their comfortable Sussex, England home and settle in the village El Hoya, Spain. It is not long before they come to learn village life is full of surprises and mishaps, with hilarious culture clashes at every turn. When Vicky and Joe unintentionally find themselves chicken farmers, Vicky says, "Oh, please! Our Spanish neighbours already thought we were insane, sitting on the yellow sofa gazing at our flock, letting them hop onto our laps, talking to them."

Whether saved by a mule or sitting at a party table in the middle of the road celebrating a neighbour's birthday (and blocking traffic), 'Chickens' not only paints a warm, funny and colourful picture of rural Spain, but also tells of how two zany Brits came to fit right in. Light-hearted and full of sunshine. A thoroughly enjoyable read.

Erma Odrach --Goodreads, Erma Odrach author of Wave of Terror, October 2009

Product Description

**New York Times bestselling author**
If Joe and Vicky had known what relocating to a tiny mountain village in Andalucía would REALLY be like, they might have hesitated...
They have no idea of the culture shock in store. No idea they'll become reluctant chicken farmers and own the most dangerous cockerel in Spain. No idea they'll help capture a vulture or be rescued by a mule.
Will they stay, or return to the relative sanity of England?
Includes Spanish recipes donated by the village ladies.

The Telegraph-- "a colourful glimpse of Andalucían life. And a psychopathic chicken or two...charming...funny"

5.0 out of 5 stars A wonderful slice of Andalucian life! 17 Oct 2009
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
This is a wonderful book! I enjoyed every page from start to finish which I reached much too quickly and would have loved if were three times longer! Vicky writes with a wonderful perspective - she and her husband have moved to an idyllic location in Spain, not of course without its trials and tribulations which are most often hilarious - I laughed out loud many times during the book! She has a lovely eye for detail and characterisation born of respect, fascination and the ever present humour that makes this one thoroughly enjoyable read! I can't recommend it highly enough and I really hope Vicky considers writing ''Chickens and Mules... the story continues..." I'd snap it up as I am sure, so would all her fans who have had the pleasure of coming across this lovely story!

5.0 out of 5 stars Warning! Incontinence pants needed!!! 18 Oct 2009
Format:Paperback
If ever you needed a really good lift to your spirits, then this is the book to read. It is packed full of fun and frolics that can't help but cheer all but the most miserable of creatures.
Such is the mastery of Victoria Twead's writing, that not only can you be enthralled, but you can `see' and `feel' everything. Laugh with them and empathise when things go awry.
You would be sadly missing a damn good read if you bypass this magnificent book. I heartily recommend it. Not to mention it being a ruddy great plus, having Spanish regional dishes included.
A great laugh and cookery book all tied up in one gorgeous little parcel.

5.0 out of 5 stars I LOVED it!! 17 Oct 2009
Format:Paperback
What a pleasure this book was! I didn't really know what to expect but it had me laughing all along. At the beginning when they forgot Great Aunt Elsa and then knocked over the village fountain... LOL! I felt I was right there with them all the time and I loved it when they got their first chickens. I could feel the Spanish sun and the characters were just hysterical. I think this is even better than Driving Over Lemons, much funnier with better characters.

5.0 out of 5 stars Into another world 30 Nov 2009
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
This is one of those books that can just transport you into another more gentle and naturally funny world where the irksome things of everyday life recede and the real humanity of existence resumes importance. The charecterisations are artfully drawn in such a way that one never doubts these people really exist however eccentric.Miss Twead is mining a rich seam of down to earth humour which never fails to captivate the reader.Thank goodnes there is still room for plain good fun and humour in this sometimes difficult world we live in.Full marks - look forward to the next installment!

5.0 out of 5 stars Chickens Mules and two old fools 21 Dec 2009
Format:Paperback
Just finished this book, I put it down as I was getting near the end and wouldn't touch it for a few days as I couldn't bare to finish it, I am missing it already, what a fabulous book, Victoria and Joe who moved to Spain to start a new life, their life in Spain sounds brilliant and they would be mad to move back to England. This is a fabulous read and it took me ages to find it as it is printed to order, what a shame it should be on every book shop shelf, I have told all my friends as we are all great readers and this one ticks all the right boxes, looking so forward to her next one. There is also lots of Spanish recipe's in it which I will be trying, don't know if I should keep this book in my kitchen or just with my other books.

5.0 out of 5 stars get ready to laugh out loud! 25 Jan 2010
Format:Paperback
I read lots of books about re-locating to Spain but this has to be the best of the lot. A very humourous tale of two Brits who move to a Spanish village and set up a new life there. Even if you have never hankered after the good life in Spain, it is a great "feel-good" novel and will bring a smile to your face.

5.0 out of 5 stars A fiesta of Spanish fun! 20 Oct 2009
Format:Paperback
Chickens, Mules and Two Old Fools
This is an excellent read filled with fun and sun, one of those page-turners you just can't put down. I especially liked the blend of pathos and humour. A scintillating array of characters that are so real they step off the page. 5* without hesitation, and I would recommend it to anyone with a sense of humour, particularly if you like animals.
