5.0 out of 5 stars Making me smile. 2 Feb 2014
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
I am thoroughly enjoying this book!
Having an autistic daughter the short stories are making me smile and think "I've been there and done that!"
It is useful to know that other parents are struggling in the same way that I did and I know that there is light at the end of the tunnel for them.
So many of the examples are similar to my experiences with my daughter.
So ... for families with autistic children it is a super book to help as a reminder of their special attributes.
For other people who are interested in autism then it is a fantastic insight into how families have to cope with their children.

5.0 out of 5 stars Very encouraging. 3 April 2013
By C. Cleaver - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback
As I read through The Chicken Soup For the Soul: Raising Kids on the Spectrum, memories come flooding back. My autistic children are adults now, so many of these descriptions are memories for me. But I so identify with these other parents, siblings, and writers who are on the spectrum themselves. There is a certain commonality among those in the autism community.

A boy in one of the stories was obsessed by the color blue. Green was my son's color for many years. Everything had to be green: his blankets, pajamas, plates, glasses, shirts. If he could have had green jeans, he would have been delighted. But a 6-foot kid in the 6th grade has to take what his mother can find. Land's End jeans unhemmed, so I could sew just the tiniest of hems. 30 x 36 was a tall order. He still needed a belt to hold them up.

The first story by Leigh Merryday speaks of the "kind of death" that occurs as we face the diagnosis of autism. The grief. I felt that, too.

The boy who was misunderstood and underestimated now speaks at Asperger's conferences. His mother says, "they should see him now."

This book is about the very real struggles that families dealing with autism face. It also includes many joys. If you want to know what autism is like, get this book. If you want to find partners in the struggle, find people who are on the same journey, get this book. You will find solace and encouragement in its pages. I recommend it.

By Brenda F. - Published on Amazon.com

I was excited to see that the chicken soup for the soul series had done a book about autism and ASD. Having a child on the spectrum I immediately ordered the book and am glad I did.It was very inspiring and moving . Reading about families dealing with the stares of strangers in public places when their child had a meltdown or sensory issues made me tear up at times, going through this now myself with my toddler I know I'm not alone . I highly recommended this book

5.0 out of 5 stars Hope Printed on Each Page 2 May 2013
By The IEMommy - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback
Chicken Soup for the Soul: Raising Kids on the Spectrum is full of stories from the heart of parents with Autistic and Asperger's children. The stories are real and not fabricated and give the reader a new appreciation for these parents.

The book covers the everyday struggles that these families are faced with, and many accomplishments along the way. It is meant to inspire the reader and give them hope if they are on the same journey.

One of the stories talks about a mom that had to take martial arts as part of her parenting to contain her son to keep him safe at times. This is her reality that the parenting books could never prepare her for and her story is so inspiring. I hope that other parents gain great knowledge from her courageous story and the many contained in this book.

There is hope printed on each page and intertwined into each story. I applaud the authors for a job well done for it touches your heart and gives the reader great understanding.

Chicken Soup for the Soul: Raising Kids on the Spectrum is moving and uplifting and will touch you deeply.

5.0 out of 5 stars A must have for all special needs parents 27 April 2013
By The Stuff of Success - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback
I am the mom of four special needs children - varying special needs and many of these stories are just as applicable to those relationships. One of our kids is on the spectrum and his challenges are definitely unique. We often feel like no one understands the challenges we must deal with. We feel isolated and sometimes challenged to the brink of what we can handle. This book is "so totally awesome". It provides renewed hope and strength to continue. I definitely could not put this book down. As soon as I heard about it, I requested it. I could not wait! I absolutely recommend this book for anyone who has a child on the spectrum or who works with children on the spectrum. The staff at my son's school is awesome but I am going to get them each this book. It can only enhance their understanding of the children and the emotions involved in raising them. Although parenting does not come with a rule book - this an awesome tool for any parent of a child on the spectrum.

I received a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
