Product Description

BBC Review

Standing proud and looking down at all newcomers from the summit of Billboard's album chart is Atlanta rapper Ludacris. With two longer-players to his name and raking up combined sales in excess of seven million units, life couldn't be sweeter for the weed smoking, womanising, beer guzzling, fried chicken eating larger than life character.

His US chart-topping single, "Stand Up", featuring Shawnna's seductive vocal interplaying, is typical of what's on offer - lightning-quick phrasing, cutting wit and reference points a plenty. Skits bridge the sexual tension on x-rated jams like "Splash Waterfalls" and "P-Poppin".

In between albums an acting career (2 Fast & 2 Furious) and his starring role in a Pepsi ad campaign, his street integrity has been questioned. Ludacris' response to the doubters, comes early on the opening cut, "Blow It Out", proclaiming: 'If you mad Im on top, then wish me gone/If you mad Im on the road, then wish me home/And if you mad that Im right, punk, wish me wrong/But after your third wish, blow it out your ass'.

Hip hop vet Erick Sermon aids the microphone fiend on the surrealist "Hip Hop Quotables", while Snoop Dogg slides in on the languid "Hoes In My Room" - a hilarious tale of the night after the show and the women it attracts that contains the immortal line: "...a lot of y'all are more stuck up than tampons".

Lud's funk is chewier and more fun then most, employing tuneful and obscure samples to his audacious rhymes. His knack for crafting catchy hip pop hasnt gone unnoticed. In it's first week of release Chicken 'n' Beer sold close to half a million units in the US alone. Ludacris is a breath of fresh air in the hip hop game, refusing (unlike some) to wear his wealth of street experience like a pimp-bold badge of honour. --Lewis Dene

Having enjoyed previous album work from Ludacris and been wowed by the host of fantastic tracks he has featured on, I had high hopes for this album. Unfortunately I found it a huge disappointment. I rarely give 2 stars to a hip hop album but this just didn't do anything for me.

Ludacris is rightly considered a top class rapper, but this album is let down by the weakness of the production and the "Distrubing Tha Peace" supporting cast. Recent single "Stand Up" was the only true class track, and it's unusual that I enjoy singles the most. There are a couple of other half-decent tracks: "Eyebrows Down" had a smooth autobiographical feel and "Splash Waterfalls" slowly grew on me, but overall there's nothing on this album to really create shockwaves.

On the basis of this offering, i totally agree that Ludacris is slowly becoming a great "featuring" artist; stunning with short breath-taking raps on other rappers' tracks but unable to produce really top stuff when he goes it alone.

This album presents a different side to Ludacris. We have heard his magnetic albums "Back for the first time" and "Word of Mouf" with their funky, crunk sounds, and assumed that Chicken n Beer would follow suit. Only it doesn't, it's more individual than previously expected and this has led to some disappointment from some but not all fans.

The album tracks are more "Outkast" style than Ludacris' typical flavour. There is emotion evident in the line up as well as some original Ludacris production which comes through heavy on "Stand Up", "P Poppin" and "Act a Fool". These three tracks however are the only ones that resemble anything Ludacris has previously done.

Every artist at a stage in their career experiments with their sound, and this is exactly what the Atlanta based rapper has done here. Out with the old, and in with the new type of funk that Luda has decided to present to his huge fan base. The album is not as a whole something that could be played whilst cruising down the high street rolling on chromes, but more a milestone in Hip Hop history. Its music contains elements of the full spectrum of this kind of music that is becoming increasingly popular with people everywhere.

I enjoy the album but its not at the top of my playlist.

good but not great 27 May 2004
By A Customer
Format:Audio CD
Ludacris has come out with a good, solid album, but which won't win any awards.

His debut was recognised as bringing some much-needed quality and content to the Dirty South genre, and Chicken'n'Beer continues with that: combining traditional Southern hip-hop characteristics with some outside influences and Luda's own unique spin on things.

There's still a good slew of bass-heavy anthems: 'Blow It Out', 'Splash Waterfalls' and the thumpin' club banger 'Stand Up' keep the subwoofers pumping, while chilled joints like 'Hoes In My Room' and 'Diamond In The Back' slow things down.

Overall this is a good album, but not Luda's best.
