Amazon.co.uk Review
A classic fable gets fused with War of the Worlds in Disney's Chicken Little. In the small town of Oakey Oaks, young Chicken Little (voiced by Zach Braff, Garden State) struggles to live down the embarrassment of having once thought the sky was falling. But when he gets struck again by a hexagonal, sky-camouflaged, hi-tech doohickey, he and his friends Ugly Duckling (Joan Cusack, School of Rock), Runt of the Litter (Steve Zahn, Sahara), and Fish Out of Water discover that aliens are preparing to invade Earth--but since no one believed Chicken Little the first time, why would they believe him now? Though kids will enjoy the bright whizz-bang action sequences of Chicken Little, discerning parents will find the movie tedious. Technically, it has the computer animation quality of Pixar--but with none of their intelligence, heart, or simple storytelling skill. The basic idea of connecting the fable to aliens is amusing, but the script routinely bogs down in clumsy father-son issues that seem like material edited out of Finding Nemo. The jokes rarely have anything to do with the characters, but are mostly pop-culture references that are sadly out of date. The action sequences were obviously created with the inevitable video game in mind, for which the movie is little more than an advertisement. Chicken Little falls flat. --Bret Fetzer

Synopsis
Disney's first venture into the realm of CGI animation (without Pixar) tells the tale of all-animal town Oakey Oaks's most infamous resident, Chicken Little (voiced by Zach Braff), who causes town-wide panic when he claims the sky is falling. A year later he's still shunned by everyone, including his dad (Gary Marshall), a single rooster with an incredibly wide tie. Determined to end his losing streak, the bespectacled Little joins the baseball team, even though he can barely lift the bat. Luckily his three equally outcast friends have faith in him: a pig with a yen for '70s disco (Steve Zahn); a Harpo Marx-esque goldfish in a diving helmet; and Abby, a buck-toothed female duckling (Joan Cusak). According to her sources in magazines such as Modern Mallard, Abby is sure Chicken Little merely needs closure with dad over the sky incident. But when the sky really does start falling due to a full-on alien invasion, and only Chicken Little knows why, dad still doesn't want to believe him. Kids are sure to understand Chick's frustration in this matter, and parents will dig the sly riffs on films like 'Vertigo' (1958), 'The Blob' (1959), 'Independence Day' (1996), and 'War Of The Worlds' (1953), as well as Disney's own back catalogue. In place of the usual musical numbers, 'Chicken Little' includes montages set to Barenaked Ladies songs and reinterpreted pop favourites (the old Art Garfunkel gut-wrencher, 'All I Know', is a standout), while celebrity voiceovers come from Harry Shearer, Wallace Shawn, Patrick Stewart, Adam West, and Don Knotts, with Amy Sedaris as the obnoxious 'Foxy Loxy'.

3.0 out of 5 stars finger licking okay-ish, 13 May 2007
If you don't have kids to entertain then stop right there and rent something else that's funnier e.g. 'Over The Hedge' or 'Happy Feet'. If you do have kids to entertain then look no further than this light-weight father-son story which retells the classic fable with a sci-fi twist. The animation is stylish but a little 'empty' feeling in comparison to the richness of environments portrayed in similar films and at times smacks of a HD Xbox-360 cut scene. That said, if you liked 'Mars Attacks' or those green tentacled guys in 'The Simpsons' and can avoid barfing up at the sentimental clap-trap towards the end then why not give it a try.

4.0 out of 5 stars Plenty of fun in another standard kids great, 18 May 2006
By Some Bloke (UK) - See all my reviews
(TOP 500 REVIEWER)
This is a fun, typical, children's story of a hapless, endearing character on the fringes of the kids social circle who discovers something amazing - but will anyone listen?

The animation is the standard brilliant we've come to expect and the central character works well because of what this brings to the way you identify with him. Great movement and facial characteristics.

The story is predictable for the adults but a good romp for the kids, and humourous enough for us old folk to sit through and enjoy. The aliens are good and evil and some of the details and little sub-events are not as expected. Good imagination as always.

I think this will be a standard favourite for the kids and will be watched and re-watched.

2.0 out of 5 stars A confusing Disney animation, 20 Jul 2008
By P. DATTA "Pritthijit Datta" (Stockton on Tees, Teesside) - See all my reviews
(TOP 500 REVIEWER)    (REAL NAME)
I have to admit the initial half an hour of Little Chicken captured my full interest. The noticeable Disney's humour and values became evident. The sequences of introducing the story and characters is well delivered. At this point, the movie looked promising and a bright Disney's prospect.

The middle parts ruined the movie completely. The rich futuristic images and the too many characters are the damaging blows. A great deal of confusion crept in my mind. A question of "What on earth is happening?" kept pondering in my mind whilst watching the animation. The aliens invasion and objects kind of triggered the confusion and the movie coherently is muddled and completely looses the plot. The movie became unwatchable and I genuinely felt like switching the DVD off, but I was patient to reach the end, even if I struggled a great deal.

Disney's latest obsession with futuristic settings does not really appeals to me that much. I prefer the original fairly telling and in my opinion truly reflects what Disney stands out for.

Little Chicken lacks the elegance and conistency in terms of direction. Animation is about utilising objects correctly and with a sense of purpose, but not adding far too much dimensions and over- emphasis on creativity. The resulting effects are wasted resources and sacrificing a solid storyline. Chicken Little appears to expose those weaknesse. On the basis of what I have mentioned, Chicken Little is a feeble attempt to deliver quality Disney animations.
