I have liked Chicago from the start but unlike probably most fans from the start actually like the power ballads era. This cd was not released at the time because it was said to move away from the power ballads back to the original sound. In fact there are 3 ballads here which would fit in superbly with any of the mid 70's onwards cd's : Bigger than Elvis; Lets take a lifetime; Here with me (candle in the dark).Champlin's Cry for the lost is also a ballad. The rest of the songs are a little dull to be honest,although they may well grow on me and I am pleased to say the magnificent horns are very much in evidence, contrary to what the first reviewer said. I have always liked Robert Lamm's songs but they are not up to his usual standard here, apart from the co written Here with me. In fact the worst song is his Sleeping in the middle of the bed, with an appalling rap. It is rather unfortunate that the title song sounds a bit like a nasty sexual disease, not the intention I am sure! The 4 bonus tracks are very good, Love is Forever is a ballad that should have been on the cd proper, and the 3 demos are every bit as good as the finished versions. In fact I prefer the Mah Jong demo which has a chorus that sounds like Steely Dan, more so than the finished version. Afer such a long wait it was probably always going to be an anti climax but I can't help thinking the executives who refused to release this had a point and most of the songs are not that good.
Incidentally, 3 of the songs have been released on the Rhino box set ( All the Years, Stone of Sisyphus, Bigger than Elvis). There was also a cd single release in Holland ( Bigger than Elvis/Lets take a lifetime)which I picked up in Amsterdam around 1998.These are the best 2 tracks in my opinion.

Originally planned for release in the early 90s this record was rejected by Warners as it wasn't representative of the band - who by that time were ploughing the middle of road fodder. I was expecting some innovative songs, remember this was the band that recorded ten minutes of feedback on their brilliant first record in 1969. There are glimpses of the great Chicago sound when Pankow, Loughanne and Parazadier are left to blow but too often Bill Champlin comes in with his dreadful voice - they should have let Robert Lamm write all the songs with James Pankow as they contribute the best song 'Here With Me - Candle In the Dark'. In fact in the booklet the band are seen in 2008, and Bill Champlin looks embarrassed that he's been able to hide his MOR dribble under the Chicago banner for all these years. Robert Lamm should have handled all the lead vocals - the cod funk vocals from Bill Champlin are poor. I'm amazed Warners rejected this as it's just like everything they recorded after 1977 - except the songs are longer. Where on earth are the horns? drowned out with synthesiers.

After years waiting for this it does not disappoint. I've followed them since CTA way back in the late 60's right through to today and saw them at Excel in 2008. This is pure Chicago at their natural best, uninhibited, doing their own thing, and not being "forced" to produce an album to satisfy a love ballad era.
It's not for those who see Chicago as "If you leave me now" but if you want to hear Chicago as they themselves wanted to sound then don't miss this!
