5.0 out of 5 stars Essential reading, 4 Jun 2003
More wonderful advice from those gooky geeks at the University of Chicago. This book is, quite simply, the best book about how to create books available.

An essential reference for authors, wannabes, editors, proofreaders, publishers and geeks.

Similar to the previous editions this fifteenth edition has a new section on American English - essential for authors wishing to get published in the growing US technical market, vastly improved electronic publications section (roll on 16th edition!) and all written with the same old authoritative reverance worthy of yet another classic.

Buyers of 14th edition will almost certainly want to upgrade just to stay current.

Five stars - this book is essential reading.

5.0 out of 5 stars Heaven... for 0.2% of the population, 8 Sep 2009
By Brago Kex (Stockholm, Sweden) - See all my reviews
As the blurb on the dustjacket says, this book is for professional editors -- and perhaps for the odd practioner of those satellite professions that sustain and vex them (authors, publishers). They probably already own this book or have it around the office. 'Nuff said. Ordinary people don't need it. Most people, even very literate people, don't even want to know what's in it. It's like a trouble-shooting manual for an aircraft carrier. Very handy if you live on one.

But nowadays with computers and lack of funding, ordinary people sometimes get dragged into publishing roles without enough professional editorial backup. Picture a bevy of academics trying to put together an anthology on a shoestring budget. If you're in that sort of situation, this book is a godsend. Just buy it. Don't think, just hit one-click. The relief is comparable to, I don't know, to nirvana or something. Really.

Or if you happen to be the sort of person who feels punctuation viscerally, whose hypothalamus dances a jig over a few well placed small capitals, or who wrote to Lynne Truss's (sic!) publisher asking for more stickers, then you will be in another sort of bliss.

Suffering from both afflictions, I spent most of the weekend immersed in this book, frequently jumping up from excitement, and only rarely nodding off. I found _The Chicago Manual of Style_ very comprehensive, very authoritative, very broad in scope. It's well indexed, reasonable in judgment, strict, yet somehow humane and forgiving (at times). It's a monument of our culture, the next best thing to what's actually in all those books, all that writing.

To sum up: if you need this book, or if you're "special", it is well worth the price. If not, if you just want something to help you write better papers in school, get any of the many cheap paperback guides instead.
