5.0 out of 5 stars Modern master returns 27 July 2010
By Marc Gustafson - Published on
Format:Audio CD
Efdemin is one of those artists that you must wait patiently for, letting the anticipation build steadily and slowly for his next release. This is his second album under the Efdemin guise, more than 3 years since his debut album was released. Of course, a lot has changed since I got my first taste. His small, boutique label Dial went from being totally unheard of outside of Hamburg, Germany to a one of my favorite labels. Every release is a delight, and they are rare and special events themselves. But Efdemin has remained my absolute favorite of the group, and I was definitely concerned that his newest album could not possibly live up to my expectations. However, my fears proved pointless, as Chicago delivers funkiness, jazziness, and lovely bass with a dash of eclectic quirkiness thrown in. The grooves are as hypnotic as ever keeping a sense of wide open space but still including a wide array of sounds, some familiar, some not so much. There has been a house music renaissance in 2010, and Efdemin and Dial remain firmly at the center.
4.0 out of 5 stars Efdemin - Chicago 17 May 2011

Efdemin's second album, Chicago, takes a much different tack from his debut. First off, the opening track, "Cowbell," features a lot of... cowbell. It also has more of a improvisatory feel to it, as opposed to his more carefully structured pieces. The kickdrum never even kicks in! "Shoeshine" brings back the beat, but the structure still remains loose, with snippets of city sounds murmuring in the background, beneath the angular synth lines. "Oh My God" is somewhat abstract until the piano chords arrive, whereupon it becomes almost jazzy, until it segues into the Chicago house of "There Will Be Singing," which takes a tribal direction halfway through before surfacing again. "Nothing is Everything" veers into abstraction again, while, on the other side of the spectrum, "Round Here" and "Night Train" are both rhythmic pounders. The reprise of "Oh My God" that closes the album emphasizes the piano chords in an ambient background. Quite the step in a new direction.
