Product Description

Product Description

Chicago has always had a reputation as a "wide open town" with a high tolerance for gangsters, illegal liquor, and crooked politicians. It has also been the home for countless black musicians and the birthplace of a distinctly urban blues-more sophisticated, cynical, and street-smart than the anguished songs of the Mississippi delta-a music called the Chicago blues. This is the history of that music and the dozens of black artists who congregated on the South and Near West Sides. Muddy Waters, Big Bill Broonzy, Howlin' Wolf, Elmore James, Tampa Red, Little Walter, Jimmy Reed, Otis Rush, Sonny Boy Williamson, Junior Wells, Eddie Taylor-all of these giants played throughout the city and created a musical style that had imitators and influence all over the world.

First Sentence
The early '50s were remarkable for the last resurgence of the country blues-a style that had been largely superseded by the urban blues of the late '30s and '40s. Read the first page

Puzzled 26 May 2010
By M. Rowe
Format:Paperback
AS I wrote this book the five star review is a little tongue-in-cheek! But I HAD to buy a copy to see what the "author" Ronald M Radano had contributed. Alas, no mention anywhere of him so I can't sue Da Capo for millions of dollars now. BUT I wonder if Amazon could investigate and correct what is a strange error and excise all mention of him. After all, why should he be blamed for any of my shortcomings?

A fundamental reference for anyone interested in the background of the urban blues. This is a reprint of the original Chicago Breakdown - advertised on Amazon for over £230! Read Robert Palmer's Deep Blues as an introduction, and after Chicago Blues go back into the Delta with Alan Lomax in The Land Where the Blues Began.

Bought for my husband a Blues fanatic. He was impressed. We have nearly every book on the subject (well it feels like it !) but he had not seen this one before.
