Product Description

Product Description
A novel about a top West End production of a classic play, from the fist day of rehearsals to the curtain coming down on Press Night. Legendary leading lady, Judith Gold, is at loggerheads with avant-garde theatre director Alexander Columbus on a West End production of the ghostly comedy Blithe Spirit. Judith considers he is ruining an excellent play. an opinion shared by fellow cast members, movie star Rupert Blake and his possessive real life wife, the glamorous though selfish, Miranda Flynn. Alexander believes he has the ambitious young Scarlett Montgomery on his side, in addition to Echo, the vacuous American ex-beauty queen, who has virtually no theatre experience and even less talent. Isabelle Whiteside is only interested in whoever delivers the best gossip, while Adam Lane merely prays to overcome his chronic stage fright. For producer Wesley Barrett, what had promised to be the perfect project has turned into a theatrical nightmare, complete with unexploded bombs and air raid sirens in what is supposed to be a 1930s drawing room comedy.

About the Author
Davina Elliott has worked on over 80 theatre productions in a variety of jobs from dresser to small time producer. She has worked at the National, the RSC and almost every West End theatre, and so writes this novel about a fictional company of actors with a professional eye and insider knowledge. Chewing the Scenery is her first novel

4.0 out of 5 stars The hidden side of theatre revealed!, 11 Dec 2008
This is a great read, I wish I had not finished it so soon, that said it was so easy just to keep turning page after page. The characters are very real, the author obviously writes from experience!

This is an entertaining, engrossing and hillarious insight into what goes on backstage and during rehearsals of a theatrical production, something that most only ever get to see the finished version of.

Who would know about all the juicy bits, I am amazed that any show ever gets produced on time!

I hope she writes another one!

4.0 out of 5 stars laugh out loud funny!, 28 Jan 2009
Chewing the Scenery by Davina Elliott
This is an extremely funny book, fast-paced with the tension maintained to the end and constant surprizes including the epilogue-style last chapter. I look forward to the next one from this author.

5.0 out of 5 stars AWESOME BOOK!!!!, 20 April 2009
A really really good read, especially if like me you are interested in what goes on "behind the scenes" of a west end production. The narrative is quick and witty, and you really get a strong feel for the characters of the story and their personalites. I normally hate reading but I honestly could not put this book down! Didnt want it to end!! I really hope there will be a good sequel to follow :D
