This book was used by me when I first started learning the piano six years ago. I didn't know anything about the piano I didn't even know how to read music but Chester's Piano Course taught me everything for my basic knowledge of Piano playing. It is a solid foundation course and misses out none of the vital information needed to learn the piano. Teamed with books two and three it is a brilliant course which I would recommend to any young piano beginners. The bright and humerous pictures brighten up the pages to make learning the piano fun and the inovative ways of teaching mean that you will always remember the information taught. I can still play 'Jelly on the Plate' which is the first tune in the book and I still remember all the useful tips that it taught me so that now, 6 years later, at grade 8 piano, and as a young teacher, I teach with the same book to all my students aged between five and eleven. A great investment for a pianists future.

I'm a piano teacher and have used this book with around 50 children now. I alternate between this and the John Thompson's Easiest piano course to refresh me...there's only so much you can take of the frog appearing on every page! Part 2 of this series is also good but by the end of part 2, it's best to move onto the Prep Test etc rather than Part 3 in my experience

Starts off INSTANTLY with the treble and bass clefs and has an excellent 6 page background to the clefs, musical alphabets etc...very thorough and something I haven't found anywhere else.

Camptown races and Pop goes the weasel and Jelly on the plate are OK tunes but the rest are very very boring...I use the 'Making the grade' series to complement this when children want to learn tunes they've actually heard of.

A note that there is a 'special edition' version of this book too with good sight reading pages.

The theory part of this book is very limited...the John Thompson one is far better but any child would benefit from one of Lina Ng's excellent theory books to complement either publication.

After having learnt the piano as a child with John Thompsons piano course, I was recommended Chesters piano course. It follows the same general structure, with easy introductions to written music, time signatures etc. But the pieces of music in this book are much more recognisable for young children using well known rhymes that many children learn in Nursery. The use of different characters such as Mo the cat, Bradley the Elephant and Chester, instantly captivated my four year old boy, and I would definately recommend this title as an excellent first step towards learning the piano, and gaining a basic understanding of musical notation.

I am teaching my 7 year old daughter with this book. I have very basic skills myself (and am tone deaf). She likes the pictures and is able to progress so far

This book has complicated accompanyments to some songs which are beyond my simple skills

Throughout the book recommends other books which go with it which would be extra expense

I would try the Usborne if I was going to do it again which is more teach yourself

I bought this for myself and for my children later on when they are a bit older. This course is great to get you started playing the piano. I movede to the second book and at that point I am feeling the need to maybe add some classes with a teacher, but this is a great start. Highly recommend it.

This is my third child learning to play and I love this series which is new to us.Lots of pieces and theory mixed in. More geared to American tunes but my child has thrived on this and needed no other beginning books it was nice also not to go through same lessons the elder two children did.
