4.0 out of 5 stars Good Primer 24 Dec 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
I have played chess for a little over 12months mainly against a computer. I purchased "The Complete Idiots Guide to Chess" when I started which was excellent and I purchased this book due to the reviews and as an alternative to the former, hoping for a greater understanding of the opening moves in chess. I skimmed the book initially before getting into each opening in more depth. I bought the the electronic format edition as I wanted to use it on a tablet and set up and save different moves in a chess program on a computer. It has worked so well. The book is easy to work through, the author makes understanding moves simple and I have made steady progress in games I have played. I am not saying that I win more games but those games I now play tend to last longer before I lose. I would certainly recommend both these books to any person starting to play chess if they want to gain a better understanding of the basics.

5.0 out of 5 stars Enough Analysis to Take in. 24 Sep 2012
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
I am a returner to chess at the age of 59 after a gap of 38 years since I was at club level.
The coverage of openings is large enough. The depth that each is taken to is about right to make recal for 5 to 7 moves. The sample games give equal coverage to a good and a bad outcome for each side.
My more regularly playing oponent complains I don't follow the openings far enough - but as I am now starting to win games this can only be a good thing for me.

5.0 out of 5 stars One word: Perfect 30 May 2011
From the fianchetto, to the best games ever recorded - Eade's book examines and dissects them all.

This book was even better than his initial introductory volume to chess.

If you know the rules of the game, and feel that you are beyond the novice stage, then this book is just right for you. Eade's writing and insight are sharper than a surgeon's scalpel. This is a truly excellent work.
