Get this if you really enjoyed "The Chess Mysteries of Sherlock Holmes" by the same author, and want more. Otherwise, try the Sherlock Holmes book first.

It states on my edition of the book that you don't need a good knowledge of chess to read it. But you will certainly enjoy it a whole lot more. Like the Sherlock Holmes book, it's divided up into little stories with very weak plots and then a retrograde study. But fear not: You can just skip the stories and concentrate on the studies. They themselves aren't really that hard, so retrograde experts might want to look for something better. For normal chessplayers, it's still a good laugh.

This is a unique book (well, together with "Chess Mysteries of Sherlock Holmes" by the same author) with problems that challenge everyone's ability to think in new ways. Most of the problems a computer would not be able to solve without help, and a human will have to invest a lot of intuition to solve them. Nevertheless, they are all straightforward and there is probably not a single one with an ambiguous solution.

On the other hand, if you look into improving your chess playing skills, this book is nothing for you. It contains hardly any problem that has anything to do with actually winning a game.
