I have been a 1.d4 player for many years and whilst I have long since worked out my favourite responses to black's most popular choices (QGD, Slav, King's Indian, Nimzo), I have never been quite sure what to play against The Grunfeld, even to the extent that I sometimes try to avoid it completely by starting with 1.c4. 1.d4 repertoire books tend to concentrate on one, sometimes slightly offbeat, line and give little or no idea as to what the other choices might be. This book is different. It offers an overview of all the major systems in The Grunfeld with only a very slight, but not significant, bias for black (The writer is, I believe, a player of this opening as black).
The Grunfeld is an opening that has been played at the very highest level for many years (think Fischer, Kasparov etc) and as such has acquired the status of "theoretical." This book makes no pretensions to being a major contribution to Grunfeld theory, and is certainly not complete, but it explains the basic concepts behind the various lines extremely clearly and with copious prose. As such I have found it invaluable in working out which lines would suit my playing style and thus finding one to fit into my 1.d4 repertoire. In fact it is so good I am thinking about ditching my beloved Tartakower and giving it a run out as black!
So if you are a 1.d4 player, looking for a way to find a response to The Grunfeld that suits you, or maybe someone looking to "dip your toes" in The Grunfeld and try it out, this book is perfect. If you are 2000+ elo, and looking for major theory, then you will need to look elsewhere.
