I have been working through several chess books for beginners these past4 weeks and have completed 2 and this book by Pritchard is my third. I can recommend it. It contains all you need to learn from scratch and leads on to the opening section and middle game (probably the hardest part to move from "I understand how to play a decent opening and develop my pieces" to "And now that my bishops and knights are out there and I have castled, what is next?"). Pritchard deals with this question by explaining positional play, the pawn structure and various ways of "pushing forward".
This is a very comprehensive book that will provide you with a sound basis.
