Cherry [aka About Cherry] is based on a script penned by the director [Stephen Elliott] and the porn industry veteran Lorelei Lee [who also stars]. It's the story of Angelina (Ashley Hinshaw) as an 18-year-old girl who works in a small town laundrette, has an aggressive dad and alcoholic mother. Her loser boyfriend (Jonny Weston) suggests that she pose for semi-naked pictures in order to earn some cash. She is a free spirit who wants more from life and hesitantly takes the plunge after which her boyfriend has second thoughts and tells her not to do any more photo-shoots. Angelina then uses the money to run away to San Francisco with her best friend Andrew (Dev Patel). The film then portrays her gradual descent from waitress to hard core porn star.
Given the subject matter the film is surprisingly restrained and Angelina' progress into hard porn is suggestive rather than blunt with a lot of things crudely said rather than seen leaving much to the viewers imagination which helps keep this out of the gutter, only toward the end does it get more graphic. Heather Graham gives a surprising performance as Margaret, a former porn star turned adult film director and takes part in one of the most explicit scenes. This single disc has no bonus features which may disappoint some, but sound and picture quality are fine. The script does falter in a few places but the film generally bounces along without dragging.
This isn't ground breaking or a must see but it is watchable and entertaining, but unlike many films of this type Angelina isn't a helpless victim, but a willing participant who displays some nasty attitudes, especially toward her best friend close to the end. If you like films like Human trafficking [Robert Carlyle], Trade [Kevin Kline] or Sex Traffic [John Simm] then you may like this.

An entertaining film about an attractive young woman who leaves her unpleasant home life to eventually work in the porn industry. But I found it a bit unbelievable that she has such a smooth ride, that there is no angst or threat, that there is no sense of possible danger in the life she leads in the big city. I did not expect the film to moralise on the porn business, but it could have done with a bit more about depth about her on the film set and what it involved, physically and mentally.
The ending also seemed to be rushed, as if once she had made a porn film that was that. She is seduced by an lesbian who she apparently only meets at the party and next moment is living in a lesbian relationship with a porn director and is a director herself. Though not being up on the workings of the porn industry, I would have thought the transition from actress to director would have been a story in itself.
And her reaction to her friend watching one of her movies was a bit OTT. Surely she would be aware that there was every possibility he would one day come across one of her films - no way she could hide once the films were available.
All in all, the film is entertaining with an attractive lead, but its a too smooth a ride in a story about a seamier world.

I really enjoyed this story ; its basically a young woman who runs away from small town / miserable home life and decides to work in sex industry . My partner found it rather dull , it certainly doesn't have the magic of say Boogie nights , this is more of a low budget indy flick . Although its an interesting cast choice of Heather Graham as the porn director [ Roller girl ! ]. I enjoyed the details about the lesbian / fetish movies [ and would have liked more of this behind the scenes stuff and less of the dull drunken mother visiting] and the ending was far too rushed. Always good to see James Franco make such positive movie choices , but Dev Patel is terribly wooden and almost embarrassed as the dull bookstore best friend . Why don't I give this film 5 stars ; I actually feel Ashley Hinshaw is too conventionally pretty to actually have stared in these movies and she never learns to porn pout. Some may find this a rather too sex industry positive spin for there taste , where as I was just pleased there was no big bad moral ending .

"About Cherry", or just "Cherry" in the UK market, is a low budget indie drama that follows the title character's journey from teen runaway to adult video starlet. It's pretty much plain sailing all the way for Cherry, which is unsurprising given that the movie was co-written by an adult film starlet and therefore does not present any negative commentary on the business.

One unusual aspect of the movie is that most of the major roles are taken by women, which is the opposite to most bigger-budget Hollywood movies. However, balancing the positive female roles, it's view of men is fairly black-and-white (abusive dad, and a late twist regarding Cherry's male best friend is truly groan-inducing).

Overall, About Cherry is OK as a low budget drama, but don't expect anything approaching the depth or quality of the epic Boogie Nights.

DOWN TO EARTH BUT NOT AS SEXY AS I WOULD HAVE LIKED. THE YOUNG LADY ADAPTS TO A POOR FAMILY BACKGROUND AND FINDS HER VOCATION IN THE END.
