Biography

COLD CAVE 'CHERISH THE LIGHT YEARS'

Nocturnal activity has always played a pivotal role in Wesley Eisold’s art. Growing up without his feet in the same soil for more than a year, restlessness and change are integral parts of his creative process. It only makes sense that Cherish The Light Years is a product not only of the nonstop electricity of a new city but also the ... Read more in Amazon's Cold Cave Store

BBC Review

Morphing underground noise scene origins into something more befitting 1980s Sheffield, Cold Cave's 2009 debut Love Comes Close betrayed its ultimate impact from title down. Despite the emotion poured in, a crucial longevity was missing. It didn't quite sate desires sufficiently for fans to consider a monogamous relationship with the New York-based outfit.

This time around, though, it's the real thing. Cherish the Light Years is, apparently, the record frontman Wesley Eisold always wanted to make. And, boy, does that shine through.

The not-so-straightforward story so far: Eisold spends much of the 2000s getting in the van with spazzed-out US hardcorers American Nightmare and Some Girls, none other than Fall Out Boy infamously half-inching a bunch of his lyrics along the way. Which past aural exhibits do little to unravel Cold Cave, wherein Eisold reboots influences from Scott Walker and the androgynous end of 1990s Britpop into distinctive darkwave pop.

From the crashing, urgently dramatic announcing bars of The Great Pan Is Dead, sheens of gothic 1980s veneer actually conceal something much deeper, more uncomfortable. A nocturnal shot of adrenaline to the heart of a paranoid urban dweller, Eisold's coal-black, almost deadpan delivery booms over synths at times misleadingly bright and airy.

Burning Sage clunks back to industrialist origins, percussion more iron lung than the "black lung" Eisold talks of throughout, while Underworld USA brims over with darkly heartfelt declarations, notably the heart-nudgingly sweet-slash-deranged couplet, "I will love you with all of the love that I have / Even if that means there's none left for me".

As Villains of the Moon heads off danger of lyrical cliché with charcoal-hearted intent – sample lyric: "Do you die in your dreams? / I don't even have them" – you're left with a sensation that this is what the much-maligned cold wave sound should have achieved. But it's Underworld USA that claims the most telling lyric, Eisold imploring somebody – anybody – to "Take me to the future / I'm ready". No need, Cold Cave; you're already outrunning most the competition in that particular direction, with one eye cast approvingly to the past.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fe(ee)el The Love ! 15 May 2011
By The Wolf TOP 100 REVIEWER VINE™ VOICE
Format:Audio CD
Cold Cave is, substantially, US singer/songwriter/noisemaker
Wesley Eisold and with his second ablum under the CC banner
there is much to enjoy and a whole lot of retro fun to be had.

Mr Eishold's heart is entwined with the dark spirit of 80's synth
pop but 'Cherish The Light Years' is an album beyond nostalgia;
it is reinvention of the most spirited and imaginative kind.
The nine tracks in this collection sizzle with wit and unbridled
affection for (and understanding of) the genre's foundations.

The tunes are strong; the beats massive; the vocal performances
drolly satisfying. The sparkling density of the arrangements and
production bristle with a wonderfully unbridled boyant energy.

There really isn't one duffer in the bunch. Dip in anywhere and
you're likely to have a big smile on your face in moments. The
nods and knowing over-the-shoulder winks really don't matter one way
or the other. There's a party going on here and I feel like dancing!

'Underworld USA' and 'Catacombs' are both terrific examples of
Mr Eisold's capacity to hold up a mirror to the past and to look
forward at the same time. His passion is palpable; his vision clear.

The totally barmy 'Alchemy and You' currently gets my vote for top track.
The blistering guitar, snarling vocals and topsy-turvy brass intrusions
had Mrs Wolf and I spinning around the cave like whirling dervishes!
(The moody but strangely uplifting final track 'Villains Of The Moon', with
its beautifully constructed chorus, comes in to land a very close second).

Blinking Marvellous!

After hearing certain tracks in a clothes shop, I was excited to purchase this. The opening and closing tracks (1-9)are brilliant in a totally over the top way, bit overall a bit disappointing.

5.0 out of 5 stars Moving on 17 Jun 2011
Format:Audio CD
I was (still am!) a massive fan of their previous album which was an extra large dollop of challenging electronic genius. Naively anticipating more of the same, I was a tad disappointed with CTLY. Giving it the 3 plays rule I always apply, I can now say I get it! This is an extension of their previous work. Cold Cave is evolving and becoming more confident in its art. The style is much more accessible (although not 100%) and they are obviously going to widen their appeal.

Electronic-wise (which is my motivation!) there are some excellent tracks; confetti and underworld usa being my current favs. There is also the 80s feel cropping up throughout. I do here myself thinking that bit sounds like Talk-Talk, Cocteaus, Joy Div/New order, Cure (for example) but to me that's a positive. A small amalgam of what's good about those artists together with bags of evident originality is, to me, what makes this an excellent album.
