Cheng Man Ch'ing is widely regarded as a modern master and this is an essential read and reference for anyone with a serious interest in T'ai-Chi - especially those studying the Cheng Man Ch'ing form. The translation is readable and concise. The writings on related subjects are of interest too, but possibly don't reflect the quality of distilled knowledge passed down from earlier generations that can be found in the T'ai-Chi sections. The guide to the Form is written to provide detailed directions and explanations for those wanting to extend their knowledge of the Form and who might be without a teacher. In that regard, the directions seem to me to be inevitably flawed because it seems unrealistic to expect to learn this complex and sophisticated martial art from a book alone. But as a study aid to a serious student, they are invaluable, as are the explanations of root, posture, breathing, use of the waist and so on. A rare vessel containing distilled knowledge.

If you follow the short Yang Style Form, this is a must have. Puts paid to the idea that Cheng's form wasn't a martial art. Applications being the Martial Applications. Very good read.Cheng Man-Ch'ing's Advanced T'ai-Chi Form Instructions: With Selected Writings on Meditation, the I ching, Medicine and the Arts

The translation is pretty good. The book is fairly short as these sorts of books generally are. Consider just ordering it from your library.

Excellent Tai Chi reference 11 Feb. 2013
By John Lloyd - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Paperback Verified Purchase
I love the photos and foot placement diagrams showing the 37 postures of the form - as good as it gets using words and pictures and better than Cheng's other books. The text is also very helpful in understanding Tai Chi philosophy and gives lots of inspiring and helpful practice tips. I do not believe that you can learn the form from any book - you need a good teacher. If you have had or are studying with a teacher of the Yang style short form this becomes a very valuable reference.

By P. Murphy - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Paperback
I have been practicing the Cheng Man-Ching Form for about two and a half years. I have made a point of buying every book with the great man's name on the cover and this book is the one that I pick up and read more often than any other.

Cheng Man-Ching's Advanced Tai Chi supplementary material 27 May 2014
By Adrian Dorsey - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Paperback Verified Purchase
I am pleased with Cheng Man-Ching's supplementary material in this book. I have been studying this tai chi for about twelve years and did not realize that he had any books published. I looked at the reviews and this book seemed to have the most impressive responses. I have just started studying the contents and I know that this will help me take my tai chi to a whole knew level of understanding. It arrived in less than a week which was fantastic.

Not a book for learning the Tai Chi form, but a great way of understanding the philosophy. Cheng Man- Ching has a great way of explaining things in a easy to understand way. I would like to read more of his writtings
