Product Description

Every once in a while you find a high impact book. Something that awakens something deep within and lasts forever. This is the one. It is a book that you can pick up time and time again and always gets something new out of it, or something deeper than you. Cheng Hsin is the best introduction for beginners to the internal practice of fighting. It is a seminal work that draws on T'ai Chi Ch'uan, Aikido, and Pa Kua Chang and was written by the first Westerner ever to win the world championship in a full-contact martial arts tournament.

I came across this book around 1995-6 and it was recommended by afriend of mine. It took me a while to read the first 30 or so pages and then I set the book down and had to seriously consider what had been written. As he says in his introduction the book speaks to you on many levels and will change as you do. At first I understood very little and had to read each paragraph 3-4 times to even get a basic comprehension of what he was saying. It took me two years to understand most of the book. Please don't expect to understand this book immediately. It's been written in a way that really makes you think. You have to read everything carefully and many times. I have subsequently studied with Peter Ralston and have found him to be an extremely accomplished martial artist and teacher.

Peter actually does what he says. Everything in the book is plainly demonstrated in his movements and responses. He has written his book in this fashion deliberately so that you can't just flick through the pages or gloss over the content - you HAVE TO ABSORB what has been written and comtemplate it. What you have to try and do is get past some of the jargon and EXPERIENCE what he is saying - not understand it, go out and practice the principles, find them in your body, experience them and results will come and if you get a chance to practice with Ralston go and do it, you won't be disappointed.

In all an excellent book but you must really persevere with it - expect some serious thinking and hard work to understand it

There is no doubt that Mr Ralston is an accomplish internal martial artist, who has proved his understanding of these profound universal principles in combat. This book I feel could only be appreciated by someone who has a reasonable grasp of an internal martial art such as Tai Chi Hsing I etc. Many difficult concepts are discussed in depth which does make thier written expression often difficult to grasp. Its important that the reader understands that at its essence what's being dicussed is very simple. His discusson on "Being" for example is complex by trying to put it into words. From someone who obviously knows this territory well I would have liked to see a greater effort towards simplification. Perhapes a few more none verbal methods to gain more insight may have been useful along with the words.

Every once in a while you find a high impact book. Something that awakens something deep within and lasts forever. This is the one. It is a book that you can pick up time and time again and always gets something new out of it, or something deeper than you ever did before. It is written by a man who is one of the most courageous I have ever met, some one who dared to venture into experiences we might dream about and others that we might never have considered possible. It is about fundamental ways of being, of connecting with principles - a source - that somehow we find ourselves disconnected from, and to the degree that we are disconnected, disempowereed, distressed, even suffering (though we may not acknowledge it). This book is about the effortless joy and freedom and power in our humanity that is available to us all, right here, right now, in every moment. Peter Ralston has made a huge diffence in my life. Allow him into yours.
