Product Description

Review

'I have used this book extensively for my teaching in the areas of atomic and molecular orbital theory, descriptive inorganic chemistry and basic spectroscopy. In all of these I find the book to be very useful, providing clear descriptions and giving a resource for students to use outside lectures.' - Matthew Almond, University of Reading

Product Description

Chemistry provides a robust coverage of the different branches of chemistry – with unique depth in organic chemistry in an introductory text – helping students to develop a solid understanding of chemical principles, how they interconnect and how they can be applied to our lives.

"Covers Physical Chemistry in an accessible format for first years...good for covering the gap between varied levels of knowledge from different schools' curricula and the mcuh more demanding University courses." - Dr Ritu Kataky, DEPT OF CHEMISTRY, UNIVERSITY OF DURHAM

I purchased this book a month ago and have found it so enjoyable that I've read it most days since. The achievement is the way the writing in conjunction with the fabulous diagrams makes university chemistry so accessible. The chapters fully cover the core topics in first year inorganic, physical and organic chemistry, and therefore there are no chapters on for example: lanthanoids, actinoids, or organometalic chemistry, etc. In my view the only topic area that is a little light is the elementary reaction chemistry of the elements, for example metal plus acid gives, and oxide in water gives acidic/basic ... with typically only 2 to 3 pages per table group. Although this would be adequate for a first year course and the standard content is there, four pages of cross group comparative content such as is found in the Shriver and Atkins "Inorganic Chemistry" book (chapter 4.6) would have really been the touch of supremacy for a first year teaching book. And yet the book truly pushes up to higher years in its clear and exceptionally well illustrated MO theory anti/bonding coverage (chap.4, 5) and its coverage of crystal field theory orbital splitting and high/low spin configurations (chap. 23). Any average content in simple element reaction chemistry is more than compensated for by chapter after chapter of carefully chosen, lucid explanation of essential chemical principles and properties. The use of attractive pastel colour highlights and photographic boxes throughout adds to a most welcoming book of introductory university chemistry.

I got I really fast :) This book is mandatory for me so I didn't have a choice but if I had I wouldn't have chosen this one since I know there a other books which are much easier to understand.
