Product Description

Product Description
Jack Parsons was a brilliant chemist, member of Cal Tech propulsion unit that invented the rocket fuel used for the US space flight to the moon. He was also a fanatical believer in the Magyck of Aleister Crowley the aging occultist who considered himself 'The Beast' incarnate. In 1947 Jack Parsons and L. Ron Hubbard were performing Crowley's mystic rituals in a house in Pasadena, California.Parsons wrote excitedly to his occult leader, Crowley: 'I have had the most devastating experience of my life. I have been in direct touch with One who is most Holy and Beautiful as mentioned in your "Book of the Law". First instructions were received through Lafayette Ron Hubbard the seer. I have followed them to the letter. There was a desire for incarnation. I am to act as an instructor, guardian, guide for nine months; then it will be loosed on the world...' Crowley wrote despairingly to a disciple about Parsons: 'It appears that he has given away both his girl and his money to this writer of science fiction and is now invoking my ritual to produce a Moonchild. I am fairly frantic...' Nine months later while being visited by two students from Cambridge, Aleister Crowley died of cardiac degeneration. Missing from his personal possessions was his magical diaries and his pocket-watch. His funeral took place in the Chapel of the Brighton Crematorium. The final rites were performed by the novelist Louis Marlowe reading extracts from Crowley's "Book of the Law". "The Brighton Echo" denounced the whole ceremony as a Black Mass. In 1952 Jack Parsons was blown up in his laboratory in Pasadena. L. Ron Hubbard died on his yacht as leader of the Church of Scientology. But did the issue end with these three deaths? Would Crowley, as he claimed, ever return from death to rule the world? Why did US astronauts name a crater on the moon after Jack Parsons? Is L. Ron Hubbard really dead? What had been generated by the ceremony in California that seemed to signal Crowley's demise? And what happened to the missing pocket-watch? Unanswered questions till, late in the twentieth century, Dr. Joshua Mathers brought a 'state of the art 'Interactive Suit' from Cal Tech California to Cambridge in England to begin an experiment that, unknown to mankind, changed the course of our planet.

5.0 out of 5 stars A CROSS GENRE STORY -HALF FACT HALF FICTION, 27 Jun 2008
By A. B. Andrews "otto" (uk) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)

I have just finished reading the tie-in book to the film and, I have to say, I'm impressed!
I decided to read the book for several reasons. First I really enjoyed the movie and wanted to relive some of it's best moments; secondly I would like to see if they developed some of the esoteric themes that were just mentioned in the movie, especially the ritual of the Chemical Wedding and thirdly an explanation of the L. Ron Hubbard connection. Gratefully the full interchange of letters between Jack Parsons and Crowley concerning L. Ron Hubbard are printed out giving the full background to one of the important themes in the film.

But the book reads so well, the style soft and straightforward, that I began to wonder if the book was not written before the film since it works so completely as a novel. So whether you have seen the film or not the book is worth reading. First for what I call the Umberto Eco's style, named after his `Foucault's Pendulum'. Although not trying to imitate Eco, the authors of `Chemical Wedding' either via a description, a pause in the narrative or by extending some of the movie scenes delve into everything, and I mean everything! From the identity of Jesus' father to the science behind light reception in the eye and how the information reaches the brain, passing through the mandatory Templar Knights to the essentials of quantum physics. Of course they don't delve too deep into it (you don't get the feeling that the authors have a PhD in... well, everything like you get when you read Eco) but deep enough to entertain and yet generate curiosity in the reader who is not familiar with such concepts.

Secondly, for those who watched the movie, the book has some extra scenes and extra information about the characters, most importantly what goes on in Leah's mind. In fact there's this whole subplot about her dead father that is developed here. Other things are interesting to know, like what happened to the purpled suit guy after his "encounter" with Haddo and also what really happened in this encounter.

Importantly where the film gives us to a large extent the newspaper version of Aleister Crowley as the Wickedest Man in the World, the book expands the character giving us many well chosen quotes from his writings revealing his intelligence, his humor, his knowledge of ancient cultures and his ideas which were well ahead of their time. This makes it clear why so many famous people considered him important and why he was voted in a recent BBC poll, the 73rd most important Britton.

The science, which delves into quantum physics is simply explained and the comparison between science and magic, fascinating and quite esoteric and actually got me thinking. There are many in-jokes for physicist like the conversation before the scientist undertakes a dangerous mission.
`Good luck. Uncertainty is your best chance.'
`I feel like Schrodinger's cat.'
`Let's hope God doesn't throw dice.'

There are quite a few typos and errors in this first printing which I assume will be corrected. So I can only hope that the book becomes a best seller so that these early copies will have special value.

Lastly, what I really wanted to know, the Chemical Wedding itself. I'm still confused about it. It involves a ceremony that mimics the story of Isis and Osiris where because of a missing phallus she has sex with him using the reed of Thoth. It is suggested that the story we know of Abelard and Heloise (where caught having sex in Notre Dame Abelard had his phallus cut off by her angry uncle) that this story is a cover up for what actually was a rite. However we may feel about this nowadays, phallus removal as a ritual is still practiced in India.

After reading this book, even though it still lacks in magical content, I now will enjoy the film even more

3.0 out of 5 stars Intriguing but flawed, 4 Jan 2009
I bought this book having watched the movie (which is very enjoyable, especially the bravura performance by Simon Callow); I was sure there was a lot more to be told which the film-makers had no time to put in. And I was right. The book reads like a British version of the Illuminatus Trilogy, hopping from quantum physics to occult history in a single sentence. I was glad I read it, and will certainly read it again, but there is one major flaw. Neither author is a writer per se, and there are some major errors of spelling and grammar; and the writing can be rather clumsy at times. Nothing a good proof-reader or editor couldn't handle, but they don't seem to have had either. A pity, because it might well put off some readers. Be nice to see a revamped, properly edited and proofed edition...
