Book Description

Chelsea's story is often split, too neatly, into two eras - everything before Abramovich, and the nine years since. But the Russian's modern club shares plenty in spirit with the generations that went before, even with the first Chelsea side formed in a pub in 1905. The scale may have changed – an undignified spending spree of £25,000 causing consternation in 1930 – but the common themes are there throughout: rich ambition, off-field soap opera, and a chaotic sense of adventure.
This colourful collection covers 20 matches that defined Chelsea's history, from 1935 to 2012. This is the stuff that every fan should know.

I'd been very disappointed by my last Chelsea kindle purchase - a totally knuckle-dragging 'fanzine' that I won't bother to name - but this was exactly what I wanted for a read on the bus or before dropping off to sleep. Of course there'll be arguments about some of the inclusions & omissions (the Champions' League semi-final rather than the Bayern final?!?), but when there are so many games I saw in my early Chelsea years (even an oddity like the '66 5-5 game with West Ham,)I don't mind. Being drawn from Guardian & Observer reports, there are also some really good writers like Hugh McIlvanney on show too. Most of the games are top & tailed with a bit of scene-setting context & what happened next. Ideal purchase for longterm Blues wanting a bit of old school Chelsea or for anyone in doubt that the club, players & supporters have as much 'history' as anyone.

This book is from the wonderful collection of Guardian Shorts produced from the Guardian and Observer archives. This collection of matches on Chelsea starts with the first report in 1935 to the Champions' League semi final in 2012. Both for price, and quality of writing it is a little gem.

4.0 out of 5 stars Perfect reading if you are a Chelsea fan 23 Jan. 2013

This is a great little book - entertaining and fun. For an over 50's Chelsea fan like me - a wonderful trip down memory lane. Only thing stopping it getting 5 starts was it stopped before the European Cup final.
At £1.99 a snip.
