The only thing wrong with this is that there's not more of it. I loved every episode, the comics are some of Britain's best, and all in all this is a terrific buy. Highlight was definitely 'The Bear' with Julian Barratt, Julia Davis and Reece Shearsmith. AMAZING, and very funny.

5.0 out of 5 stars Hilarious!! 23 Aug 2011
By Becky
I'm a big Chekhov fan, so I had to have this. Mackenzie Crook marvelous with Johnny Vegas in 'A Reluctant Tragic Hero.' Crook's facial expressions were nothing short of PERFECT. He had only a small fraction of the lines, but his perfectly timed reactions really made him the focus, for me, at least!! Definitely worth the buy.

4.0 out of 5 stars next best thing 10 May 2011

Sometimes well known performers can detract from a piece, here you were kept attentive listening to every word. On stage Chekhov's Shorts were a great nights entertainment not quite repeated on the box but a very acceptable performance of very entertaining short plays. If you can't get to the theatre then this is certainly next best thing.

4.0 out of 5 stars Entertaining but a mixed bag 24 Aug 2013
Verified Purchase
As a Chekhov fan and also a fan of modern comedy, I was really looking forward to this, and although the performances are a mixed bag, it is always entertaining. The best of the bunch is Steve Coogan who blends comedy and pathos masterfully in "The Evils of Tobacco", "The Bear" also has a uniformly excellent cast whereas "The Proposal" is slightly let down by Matthew Horne, whom you can see acting. The poorest short is undoubtedly "A Tragic Role" with Vegas rather one note and Crook, woeful. That said, when it is good, it is very very good and despite a couple of misjudged performances, this DVD is a little comic gem.
