funny, true, sad 1 Sep 2001
By A Customer
Format:Hardcover
This is a gripping story about a young man, Cheevey, growing up in a family that refuses to talk to eachother. The only person the family members speak to is Cheevey himself, so he becomes the one they all come to with their problems, they lean on him in emotionally difficult moments. As if this was not enough to take, he falls in love with his brother's ex-girlfriend, which brings even more complications into his already confused life. Then, one day his mother has news that will change all of their lives forever. I absolutely loved the book! I couldn't keep back the tears at the end of the story, which has such an unexpected outcome. If you liked "The Catcher in the Rye", you will love this one too.

A Superb Book. 27 Jan 2011
Format:Paperback
I agree with the other reviews, this is a beautifully written book which has left me wanting more from this very talented author. Gerald DiPego writes about a dysfunctional family with Cheevey at it's center, trying to cope with being the go-between, whilst everything is falling apart around him. Cheevey is so very likeable and the characters and storyline feel very real and true. Almost every page makes you stop, think and wonder, about life and family life and it's struggles and complexity in particular. Mr. DiPego makes you care about his characters, you feel as though you know them, (or people like them.) He allows you to feel what they are going through, when Cheevey falls in love, he really falls, and the narrative is just so moving and passionate. Everything about this lovely book moves you, there is sweetness and joy, deep pain and heartache, and also much food for thought. I really didn't want to come to the end, as it will be hard to find another book quite as touching and engrossing as this one. It moved me to tears, for all it's pain and beauty, but it was well worth every minute of it!
